PASSION INDIA

The story of the Spanish Princess of Kapurthala

FOUR MILLION READERS WORLDWIDE HAVE BEEN FASCINATED BY THIS LOVE STORY THAT TRANSPORTS US TO THE FABULOUS WORLD OF THE MAHARAJAS -FILLED WITH HAREMS, JEWELS, PALACES, FLAMENCO MUSIC AND TIGER HUNTING.

On January 28, 1908, Anita Delgado, a beautiful, but barely literate, Spanish teenager, danced a brief flamenco in a Madrid nightclub where she caught the eye of a visiting Indian prince, Sir Jagatjit Singh, the Maharaja of Kapurthala. They married and she spent the next 18 years living in opulent luxury, in the Himalayan foothills. She was the Maharaja’s fifth and favorite wife, and he showered her with attention. What ensued was a grand story of love and betrayal that unfolded over almost two decades, in the heart of an India that was on the verge of disappearing.

Javier Moro (Madrid 1955), one of Spain’s most acclaimed and widely read authors, has written extensively on India. His books include: The Jaipur Foot (1995), The mountains of the Buddha (Full Circle, 1999), Five past midnight in Bhopal (with Dominique Lapierre, Full Circle 2001), Passion India (Full Circle 2005) and The Red Sari (Roli Books, 2015). In 2011, he was awarded the Premio Planeta, the Spanish language’s most prestigious award, for El Imperio eres tú, (You are the Empire), the story of Brazil’s first emperor and the making of the Brazilian nation. In 2015, he published A flor de piel (Seix Barral, 2015) (Under the skin), the tale of the Spanish expedition which delivered the newly discovered smallpox vaccine to the New World. In 2018, he was awarded the Premio Primavera de Novela for his novel Mi Pecado (My Sin).
