About this listen
How do you survive working in law enforcement without killing yourself?
Those in uniform keep our world safe and often pay a high price for fulfilling their duty mentally and emotionally. Retired Sergeant Eric Weaver can attest to this, as he lives with mental illness and struggled with the issue of suicide on numerous occasions, including multiple hospitalizations, while serving as a police sergeant. Now he is a nationally recognized expert, speaker, instructor, and advocate on law enforcement mental health issues, including officer wellness and crisis intervention team training. In Overcoming the Darkness, he gives a raw accounting of his own experiences coupled with knowledge and pragmatic advice gained from 20 years of instructing literally thousands in law enforcement about mental illness, cumulative stress, trauma, substance use, PTSD, and suicide.
With cries of defunding police, the attacking of our profession, and so many other factors in our society, we often forget or put aside our emotional well-being. It is our sincere desire that this book is one of those resources that provides a practical approach to understanding the value and importance of our emotional wellness.

Story
The revised and updated edition of Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's modern classic about the psychology of combat, hailed by the Washington Post as "an illuminating account of how soldiers learn to kill and how they live with the experiences of having killed". In World War II, only 15 to 20 percent of combat infantry were willing to fire their rifles. In Korea, about 50 percent. In Vietnam, the figure rose to more than 90 percent. The good news is that most soldiers are loath to kill.

So much more than I expected
Sir,
I just finished your book today and I have to say it was more than I expected. Thank you for sharing your story, experience, and wisdom.
I too am a Sergeant, 25 years with the same agency. I've just about seen it all and done it all, including having an OIS. I began our Peer Support program at my agency after our Sheriff asked for someone to step up and start it. I did it mostly because I love the people I work with and partly because I was struggling myself. Over the past two years, I've started therapy with EMDR and have learned many things.
I plan on using some of your thoughts on breaking the stigma if that's okay with you. Again, great book. Thank you, Jeff Carpenter.
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
