About this listen
Alan Arkin, one of the most beloved and accomplished actors of our time, reveals a side of himself not often shown on stage or screen.
Like many teenagers, 16-year-old Alan Arkin had it all figured out. Then came young adulthood, and with it a wave of doubt so strong it caused him to question everything he thought he knew about himself and the world. Ever skeptical and full of questions, Arkin embarked on a spiritual journey to find something—anything—to believe in. An existential crisis in his 30s led him to the study of Eastern philosophy. Soon he began opening himself to the possibility that there was more to life than what he had simply seen, heard, or been taught.
In this Audible Original "mini-memoir," the 84-year-old actor shares his powerful spiritual experiences, from his brush with reincarnation to the benefits of meditation. In a gruff, earthy voice that sounds more suited to a New York cabbie than a spiritual guide, he shows us that wisdom can come from the most unexpected places and teachers. Out of My Mind is a candid, relatable, and delightfully irreverent take on how one man went searching for meaning and ended up discovering himself.

Story
Academy Award-winning actor and author Alan Arkin tells a brilliant tale in this young-adult novel, The Lemming Condition. The story is an allegory on conformity, as Bubber, a lemming, is faced with following his entire race to self-induced extinction. Bubber struggles to decide if he should participate in what appears to be an insane death walk, only to constantly be told by family and friends that this is just the way things are. The story provides a superb lesson on conformity, free thinking and personal accountability.

Brilliant, funny, and widely regarded as the nicest man in Hollywood (though he would be the first to tell you that it’s simply not the case, he’s really just grateful to be here), Henry shares in this achingly vulnerable memoir the disheartening truth of his childhood, the difficulties of a life with severe dyslexia, the pressures of a role that takes on a life of its own, and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you.

Go Behind the Scenes of Out of My Mind
Listening to Alan Arkin feels like a visit with a friend.
As a fan of Alan Arkin's Improvised Life, I couldn't wait to hear his "mini-memoir" Out of My Mind. The title delivered what I hoped to hear: Arkin's familiar, friendly, assured voice. To listen to Out of My Mind feels like a visit with a kind mentor who believes in meditation, family, and work. He's not trying to commit an act of confessional literature, he seems instead to want to share an honest story in a straightforward style, and the result is engaging and accessible. For me, Out of My Mind was a the perfect antidote to end-of-year frenzy.
Our favorite moments from Out of My Mind

Tedious
Arkin’s monotone performance is perfectly gauged to his uninspired self-analysis. Some of the stories are interesting but overall the book is pointless. If you’re enamored with Arkin onscreen, you’ll continue your fandom. If you can take or leave him onscreen, then leave him here.

Awakening
Here within the past 2 years I've been struggling with religion. GOD came to me one summer day. It wasn't a voice but almost like visions. Like this book, I have a fire in me, to learn everything I can. I tell anybody about my encounter who will listen and sometimes when I try not to talk about it, it still makes it's way into the conversation. I've been trying to explore other people thoughts on religion to see what are their beliefs. This book was a chance encounter in my journey that I'm on. I will read some of the books referenced in here to try to broaden my mind. Also with what I feel is me growing closer to GOD I am becoming less afraid of death. Wonderful wonderful book!
