50/50 Split - Funny & Informative

I thoroughly enjoyed David Oakley’s tales of his many hilarious interactions with his family members and folks in the community.

When he described realizing that both he AND his parents were at a naughty movie, I was blushing!

There’s nothing better than when an author is also the narrator of an audiobook so we can really HEAR the author’s stories.

I was lucky enough to listen to Nobody Eats Parsley on my long commutes to and from work and was laughing out loud a few time.

David found a real life UFO in his house and had to literally gear up to fight it and get it out.

Do yourself a favor and listen - prepare to laugh!

Fun Listen For Friday Laughs

These are my favorite kind of books to read, and I jumped at the chance to listen to Oakley's book, "Nobody Eats Parsley." It's been a long week, and I needed a good laugh. I loved the bite-size stories about family and the little moments that stick with you for years to come. It's stories about trying to keep your grass green, or spending time with your sick mom, that make the doldrums of potty training and grief from dealing with dying grandparents a little bit more bearable. By the time I got to "Just Nuke It," during hour 6,000 of listening to virtual school with my kids... I couldn't help but giggle out loud. My mood was lifted and suddenly the world didn't seem so serious. He's inspired me to look on the sunny side of my struggles during covid times, and to be sure to write down some stories for future laughs.

I loved listening to this book, even more than reading it. It was light and Oakley's presentation-- although sometimes it felt like he was trying too hard -- overall, I loved it. I always love hearing authors read their own works, and I think with a little more practice it will sound more natural.

A funny one.

This audiobook was good for a few laughs. Several of the stories were quite relatable. I liked that each bit was broken down into a chapter so I could break up the listening easily without losing my place or plan to listen for just a chapter or two when I didn’t have a lot of time. The storytelling is reminiscent of a comedy show... A bit exaggerated or over the top at times but it all came together in the end to make a good story.

A series of unfortunate events

Lifelong collector of strange and weird stuff, David Oakley brings us with Nobody Eats Parsley: And Other Things I Learned from My Family an absolutely insanely hilarious collection of short stories that depict at times some almost unbelievable events.

Although he took some precautions regarding real names and some literary liberties when it comes to the narrative, all these stories are inspired by real events from his interesting life.

Probably the most extraordinary thing, besides these uncanny situations our David finds himself in is the fact that he took the time to record the audiobook version himself. This way, we as listeners are delighted by the opportunity to have an inside look into the way he has perceived his own "adventures".

David reads Nobody Eats Parsley: And Other Things I Learned from My Family with a subtle southern accent and an energetic cadence. He manages to help the listener immerse themselves into this series of "unfortunate events". I always appreciate when an author takes the extra time to record the audio production themselves and even more when they do a great job of it, which is the case now.

A funny exploration of the need to collect things, uncanny family situations and random life lessons, Nobody Eats Parsley: And Other Things I Learned from My Family can be the perfect opportunity for us to blow off some steam, relax and laugh out loud. If you are in the mood for a quick listen, I highly recommend Nobody Eats Parsley: And Other Things I Learned from My Family by David Oakley.

Hilariously Entertaining

I absolutely love that the actual author narrated this book. I have read this book and just loved it and was so excited to listen to it as an audio book! The author definitely makes the book so much more entertaining by narrating it himself. I would recommend this audiobook for adults or a more mature audience. I love the fact that what you get from this book is completely not what one would expect. The humor and the stories are relatable and allows the listener to remain engaged. I personally lost all track of time listening to this book. For me, a great book distracts you from reality if even for a moment in time. This audio book does just that!

Hilarious stories of up bringing and family

David Oakley is not only a great author but a superb narrator too. You can hear his passion for his stories and the comical recall of his voice when he tells them to you. This book is a set of stories of David's life. It is very relatable and down right funny. They include stories of his life growing up as a kid and realizing your parents are people too ( Starlight Drive Inn) ( Dad getting stung). They touch base on how he and his wife started out in the business.( Clown School) And their life together. (Watching the dog) He talks about raising his kids (Trip to Hawaii) and I really enjoyed the stories of him and his sister Lisa as they grew older and hung out with their mom in Vegas. And the family gathering memories. I recommend this audible book because it was like having a conversion with an old friend just remising about the dumb stuff we did growing up. I loved it.

Funny and relatable

From the get-go, I feel like I was a part of his family! His stories are so relatable and I'm convinced he sounds a lot like my husband with all that F-bombs peppered in between his stories. I now have to get his 1st book.

Constantly Laughing!

This audiobook was so easy to listen to. As a matter of fact it was like listening to a friend telling stories. I completely enjoyed the author reading the story because it gave to a more authentic feeling of what he was meaning and the emphasis needed to get the point across in the story. The story about the UFO was hilarious. That experience was similar to one I have had in my past. I feel that way about most all the stories, like they were totally believable and hilarious. I was constantly laughing and in awe of the situations he was either involved in or placed himself in. Get this audiobook, listen to it! You will not regret it!

Hilarious and Thought Provoking

I swear, it doesn't matter how old I get, bathroom humor will always be funny. Not only is this book filled with funny, family stories but with thought-provoking moments that really feel relatable. David does an amazing job of including you in on his thought process. Again, totally relatable as I find my own mind travels along with the what-ifs. Whether it was the moment of "Oh my god I need the bathroom NOW" moments or finding humor during what could be a potentially traumatic moment of his mother's simple cold that turned into something more. I found myself laughing hysterically through many moments and had my kids looking at me like I was nuts. I unplugged my headphones and had them listen to the bathroom parts, and they shared a laugh with me. This is such a fantastic book! I loved hearing David narrate this himself as it added to the overall uniqueness of his stories.

Jeff Foxworthy fans will rejoice

I found the audiobook entertaining overall, with smirks and smiles abound. No laugh out loud moments, but definite snickering. However, I think the 2 reasons I couldn't give this 5 stars were pretty significant in my book (pun intended). First, the author did write this as a collection of anecdotes, however, some of them seemed to be grossly exaggerated in that anecdotal category. The money box, for example, was a waste of the few minutes it took to listen to the chapter. Nothing about that, to me, was worth sharing in a book, let alone at a gathering of friends for a couple of hardy har hars. It felt like we needed more pages or time added (a directive of an editor to the author, maybe), so that's what the author came up with. The other reason I wasn't over the moon about the audiobook was because the author narrated it himself. In the past, this was only a negative to me if the author either had an immensely annoying, nails-on-chalkboard or if the author would put me to sleep in a dry, monotone voice...which is NOT the case in this book. But I found that, for the first time, I wasn't thrilled because it was very "schtick" like. Because he's reading these stories of his own, Mr. Oakley's tone came off as arrogant (like "This is the funniest story ever," or "Get a load of this punchline..."). It was like a really haughty stand-up routine, and I found myself annoyed more than entertained. I did enjoy some of the stories he shared and I suspect many people who love books by stand-up comics will get a real kick out of this contribution by David Oakley.
