About this listen
LESSONS LEARNED FROM A LIFE TURNED UPSIDE DOWN
2nd Edition with more stories! After facing sudden loss of mobility after brain surgery to save her life, Marjorie has now regained much of her ability to walk (with support). Writing about her outings and lessons learned along the way are at the core of this story. She captures the kind of moments so many of us fail to notice while never forgetting to savor the miracle of being alive.
These short meditations (liturgies) in this topical memoir invite you to take a welcome respite from a world turned upside down. The “easy walks” of the title reference both the Easy Walks book series she continues to add to as well as the small and larger insights she shares with us.
Some wisdom excerpts:
Letting go is something that happens on its own time schedule, not because of trying harder. When we find the strength, the letting go will happen. Not because of a conscious decision, or from being shamed into taking this step, or for any other reason than that we have held on enough, tightly enough, strongly enough, long enough. Only then will letting go be possible. Not only possible, it will be exactly the right step to take. It will be time.
The unexpected is part of our existence, welcome or not. Learning to embrace change can take a lifetime.
Be willing to look silly, and never ridicule. Offer respect. Believe that your audience (whoever that audience is—one or one thousand) wants you to succeed, and never apologize. As much as possible, structure your time so children feel they are in control. Convey your faith in them. And if things start getting out of control, whisper. Children just can’t resist the possibility that they’re missing out on something. Grownups have been known to feel this way too.
The role of anxiety: Anxiety about an undertaking does not imply a lack of desire; sometimes the feared activity is what we most need. Reluctance can be a signpost, a clue that there may be something important beyond the fear. Being offered a firm and kind hand for a season is just what some of us need. A dash of imagination doesn’t hurt, either.
We humans were not created to live alone. Living together, however, can be hard! Despite our social nature, we all need some solitude. Rubbing the rough edges off one another is what family seems to do best. Truth-tellers who are life-long friends or who enter our lives for a season bring that same grace to our lives.
This is an inspiring series of stories written in plain English. Take a walk and reflect on what really matters. You will learn (among many other things) how a bell, a ball, and a bicycle have created space for joy in the midst of an uncertain future. Pat answers are not available here. An invitation to think, listen, and wonder is what is on the table.
