About this listen

Miss Mildred Percy inherits a dragon.

Ah, but we’ve already got ahead of ourselves…

Miss Mildred Percy is a spinster. She does not dance, she has long stopped dreaming, and she certainly does not have adventures. That is, until her great uncle has the audacity to leave her an inheritance, one that includes a dragon’s egg.

The egg—as eggs are wont to do—decides to hatch, and Miss Mildred Percy is suddenly thrust out of the role of “spinster and general wallflower” and into the unprecedented position of “spinster and keeper of dragons.”

But England has not seen a dragon since…well, ever. And now Mildred must contend with raising a dragon (that should not exist), kindling a romance (with a humble vicar), and embarking on an adventure she never thought could be hers for the taking.

Pride and prejudice and dragon

Funny and sweet. Not a story about dragons, really. More a regency romance with a dragon in it.

Fun but slow wordy romp

Why use one sentence when you can use 6? I think the style is a legitimate callback to Austen and similar era writing, though not having read it myself I could be wrong. If you enjoy that style and know what you’re getting into then it’s a lovely story…if you’re hoping for a bit more action and more dragon, well, it’s a bit of a let down (though Fitz is great and the characters, including the dragon, are well fleshed out). Just could use a bit more showing and less telling in the writing itself, IMO.

Entertaining

This is a sweet story of a surprising inheritance by a staid and proper Englishwoman. Adventure and a little romance develop along the way.

Totally charming tale narrated by the magnificent Zara Ramm

After listening to the entire St Mary’s series for the sixth time, I was looking around for something new. I stated my search by narrator and came a toss this book. It is very charming, strong female lead, fun premise. I listened over two days. Already downloaded volume two.

Delightfully cute cozy story.

This is a delightfully cute cozy story about a spinster in Edwardian England whose lived her entire life as a shadow person to her domineering younger sister. Currently living as a nurse maid and tutor to her sisters kids, in her sister's house. And due to circumstances she inherited some of her uncle's possessions including a Dragon egg... and as the newly hatched baby Dragon grows and spreads his wings she's emboldened enough to spread her's too.
Zara Ramm absolutely caught the flavor of the time period and of Maud Percy as she narrated this story.
