It’s never good when you get a phone call in the middle of the night.

For Vasily Korsokovach, it’s particularly problematic when the caller happens to be his estranged mother seeking a favor for a family friend. Vasily’s inclination to hang up on her is overridden by his shock that Emelina Korsokovach would even make the attempt to reach out in the first place, so he reluctantly agrees to drive halfway across Orange County on what he’s certain is a wild goose chase.

Everything goes right out the proverbial window when Vasily’s off-the-books wellness check gets upgraded to a full-fledged murder investigation that uncovers an insidious identity theft ring operating right beneath his nose — one specifically targeting the adult children of the more affluent families in Orange County. Families that have collectively lost millions of dollars to some sort of modern day Robin Hood who boldly begins taunting the authorities through social media as the victims begin to pile up.

Forced into the position of protecting a way of life that had been denied to him nearly a lifetime ago, Vasily finds himself up against a cunning thief capable of completely transforming themselves in order to get close to their victims in order to wipe out any size bank balance in the blink of an eye.
