High School is the revelatory and unique coming-of-age story of Sara and Tegan Quin, identical twins from Calgary, Alberta, who grew up at the height of grunge and rave culture in the '90s, well before they became the celebrated musicians and global LGBTQ icons we know today. While grappling with their identity and sexuality, often alone, they also faced academic meltdown, their parents’ divorce, and the looming pressure of what might come after high school. This is the origin story of Tegan and Sara.

When my mother decided to pull me out of school, I didn’t say anything. When she homeschooled me, isolated me, kept me fearful of my peers, I followed along. When she packed me up and sent me across the country to live with my grandmother in the one-stoplight town of Lee Vines, I did as she said. But now that she’s left me here I’m on my own. I can make my own decisions. Make my own mistakes. And that includes if I let in the four boys that live next door.

Whitney had some misgivings when she dropped her increasingly moody teenage daughter, Amelia, off at Lauren’s house. She’d never met the parents, and usually she’d go in, but Amelia clearly wasn’t going to let something so humiliating happen, so instead Whitney waved to her daughter before pulling away from the little house with the roses in front. But when she goes back the next day, an elderly couple answers the door - Amelia and Lauren aren’t there, and this couple swears they never were, that she’s at the wrong house.

So well written! The story, the characters, the events, EVERYTHING! I fell in love with and related to multiple characters. I also really appreciated the authors commitment and enthusiasm while telling the story. Made me feel as if I was sitting and talking with a friend. I cannot wait for a sequel!

Such a rollercoaster but worth it!
With each decision made by Lukas, I both empathized and wished I could yell support and suggestions along with telling him off. lol. Sometimes there are no good decisions, and the second hand anxiety was high, but he pulled through! Its not the traditional coming of age story, but I think all the better for being real in the way that so few stories are - all the messy bits of life and relationships of all kinds included. I know next time I read through, I'll be drawn in just as much and just as invested in Lukas and his life, and hope for the future.
