About this listen

Modern art in the simplest description, the art of our time. The era of Modern Art came to a close during the early 1970s and the era of Contemporary Art emerged. What makes Contemporary Art different from all other predecessors is its much more socially conscious nature. It reflects the issues which surround and confound us in the world today. Issues such as globalization, feminism, multiculturalism, bio-engineering and even AIDS are addressed in some form or another by artists of this contemporary period. Does Contemporary Art have defined borders as other forms before it? No, not particularly. Artists do not proudly proclaim themselves to be innovators of Contemporary Art but on the other hand, nor do they hide away from the term and no-one denies that they work in the current form. Art has in a way become as multicultural as our society is today – it draws inspiration from many diverse aspects of our world. The world is an oyster indeed when it comes to the movement of artists across the globe. There are no longer the restrictions on the travel of these artists – the Berlin wall has gone, the USSR has ceased to exist, even China’s citizens are allowed to travel more than they have ever been able to before. Europe and the majority of the western world have not seen war cross their borders for many decades and although there is still considerable unrest in many parts of the world, even this does not preclude the artists from those regions from travelling to other countries to share their art and knowledge with others. Thus, art today has become as contemporary as we choose it to be – it is indeed a reflection of our society, how we live, work and play but it also reflects the difficulties which we live through on a day to day basis. Although modern society is seen as being a much easier and more comfortable place to be than in say the Middle Ages and it is undoubtedly so, the modern world brings its own particular type of problems. The artists of today are able to express their feelings with more freedom and less boundaries than they have ever been in the past and their art reflects this freedom entirely. They share ideas with other artists on a global scale and again, their art reflect this. New technology is embraced by them and instead of - as some may have feared in recent decades - technology robbing the art world of its innovation, it has in fact enhanced it. The new and emerging artists of the contemporary era bring with them new ideas based on the fast-paced technological world in which we live but at the same time, many of them recognize the inherent problems which that very technology can bring to our fragile eco-systems and again, their art reflects this and makes the observer think deeply about what they are attempting to portray. Broadly speaking, Contemporary Art mirrors society today. It offers general audiences, students and teachers alike a rich resource from which to contemplate and consider ideas which are current and to think of alternative ideas to the familiar. Contemporary artists work with a wide diversity of mediums, methods subject and concepts which challenge the more traditional boundaries. The era of Contemporary Art has become distinguished through the complete lack of uniformity of the art form today. The artists of today see their work as a means to give a voice to the sometimes difficult and challenging landscape of multiculturalism. Scroll up and buy this book now to read more. Art
