About this listen

Separated from friends and family and haunted by personal demons, park ranger Anna Pigeon finds solace in the quiet ruins of the Anasazi civilization of Colorado's Mesa Verde. But the rugged beauty of the park and the mystery of the Anasazi are cruelly overshadowed by danger and death. Lately, visitors to Mesa Verde have been bringing home more than photos - they're also carrying a strange, deadly disease, and once it strikes, Anna Pigeon must find the very human source of the evil wind.

What listeners say about Ill Wind

Highly rated for:

The Story Revolves Around Anna Pigeon, A Park Ranger Who Finds Herself Embroiled In Various Mysteries And Crimes Across Different National Parks. While The Storylines Are Generally Engaging With Intriguing Mysteries, Compelling Characters, And Descriptive Nature Writing, Some Reviewers Found Certain Plots To Be Convoluted Or The Premises Unbelievable. A Recurring Issue Mentioned Is The Poor Audio Quality, With Muffled Sound, Inconsistent Volume, And Unclear Narration At Times, Which Hindered The Listening Experience. Overall, The Books Explore Themes Of National Parks, Crime Fiction, Environmental Conservation, And Feature A Strong Female Protagonist In Suspenseful Mystery Tales.

a literate adventure with the intrepid Anna Pigeon

Loved every winding trail of this story. Anna is a brave, complex, lovable, and admirable character and Ms Barr is a gifted writer, a superb prose stylist and fine story teller. And I can't imagine a better narrator for these novels than Barbara Rosenblatt, her rendering full of nuance and never a false note.

Sound Quality Issues

We always enjoy listening to Nevada Barr’s books, and this one was no exception, but the sound quality left a lot to be desired. We had to rewind many, many times to understand the words being spoken.

Enjoyable whodunit

Just the right blend of romping through parklands, catching the bad guys, and entertaining dialog.

Could not finish book because of sound quality.

I have listened to hundreds of books on Audible and this is the first time I’ve had to stop listening and read the book because the sound quality is horrible and worsens as the book goes on.

Agree on sound quality

When I first read the reviews on sound quality, I thought they were maybe overblown. But I could not listen to this book through my car stereo even on full treble. Some of the names, places and words were muffled and it was hard to follow to story. I could listen with headphones and some later parts seemed more clear. All that said, the story was on par with the prior books and I enjoyed it overall.

Good audio book

Loved the location in Mesa Verde national park. I have been there and that made the book much more interesting. Audio quality was not as good as most audio books. It was hard to hear without headphones.

Poor recording

Volume and clarity at end of phrases and sentences was poor. And sometimes there were short skips. Part of this was a recording quality issue and to a smaller extent a narration issue. Enjoyed the story line.
