About this listen

Dan Wells's debut audiobook, I Am Not a Serial Killer, is the first installment in a trilogy that will keep you awake and then haunt your dreams.

John Wayne Cleaver is dangerous, and he knows it.

He's spent his life doing his best not to live up to his potential.

He's obsessed with serial killers, but really doesn't want to become one. So for his own sake, and the safety of those around him, he lives by rigid rules he's written for himself, practicing normal life as if it were a private religion that could save him from damnation.

Dead bodies are normal to John. He likes them, actually. They don't demand or expect the empathy he's unable to offer. Perhaps that's what gives him the objectivity to recognize that there's something different about the body the police have just found behind the Wash-n-Dry Laundromat - and to appreciate what that difference means.

Now, for the first time, John has to confront a danger outside himself, a threat he can't control, a menace to everything and everyone he would love, if only he could.

"The beauty of the prose, mixed with the depth of characterization, gives the haunting, first-person narrative a human touch. regardless of your age or your genre preferences, you will find this story both profound and enthralling.” (Brandon Sanderson, New York Times best-selling author)

“Brilliant! full of unforgettable characters, creepy thrills, and dangerous twists you won’t see coming.” (Jonathan Maberry, New York Times best-selling author)

After 1st book: I thoroughly enjoyed John, his mom, his psychiatrist, and the story. John is definitely disturbed and a bit creepy (stalking people), but he's also a really fun protagonist as well. I was surprised by the supernatural element in the story, but came to enjoy it. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole book -- even the creepy parts.

After 5th book in this series: I'm about to click on the 6th book, and I'm sad because I don't want this to end, even though I want to find out what happens. I am somewhat in love with the main character, who is unexpected and frightening and loyal and a good person all at the same time as being a sociopath who dreams about murdering people. I just love this series.

I Love This Series

Crime drama and serial killer lore are not my thing, but I took a chance because of the title and cover art and it was in a 2-1 sale.
This was a fun listen and I enjoyed myself. While I thought this wasn’t “my thing” it did steer towards the things I commonly listen to. I may even try the second book in the series.

Very interesting listen

Such a great book. kinda a rip off of Dexter but hey still awesome. just wish the narrator acted more then read. also some music in the background would be cool. Otherwise, this book has become a favorite and I can't wait to own my own personal copies.

Lacking Emotion.

I jumped into this one with an expectation that was met until about half way through the story when hings changed and I was blindsided in a pleasant way. Looking forward to the second book in the series.

I was looking for a new audiobook to listen too, and I was bouncing around unsure of what new series start. Then I tried looking under books read by Kirby Heyborne and found this gem! I’m gonna read through the entire series now. Kirby did an excellent read of Gone Girl as well as two books by Brom, Krampus and The Child Thief. Something about the way he reads a story is so encapsulating and interesting. The story of John Cleaver was a wild ride too. SPOILERS AHEAD………. The entire time I was wondering if the plot twist would be that John was making everything up in his head and he was actually the killer making up everything he saw with Crowley, but I was both surprised and relieved when his mom came in the end and everything turned out to be real. I hope he gets his comeuppance for attacking Mrs. Crowley though, he’s so hard on himself I don’t think he should gotten off so easy. I’m excited to see where his story goes from here.

Kirby does it again

I don't know how to review this in a clear way. I liked it well enough, but the main character was unlikeable. I think that was intended, but I can't say I enjoyed the book and I wouldn't read a second one.

There was too much self pity for me.

Not for me, but not awful

I enjoyed the first person account of the character and the book was very difficult to “put down” once I started.

Gripping story
