About this listen

#1 New York Times Bestseller * A New York Times Notable Book * An NPR Best Book of the Year

Holly Gibney, one of Stephen King’s most compelling and resourceful characters, returns in this chilling “exploration of grief and delusion, just pure undistilled evil” (New York magazine) as she uncovers the truth behind multiple disappearances in a midwestern town.

When Penny Dahl calls the Finders Keepers detective agency, hoping for help locating her missing daughter, Holly Gibney is reluctant to accept the case. Her partner, Pete, has Covid. Her (very complicated) mother has just passed away. And Holly is meant to be on leave. But something in Penny’s desperate voice makes it impossible to turn her down.

Meanwhile, mere blocks from where Bonnie Dahl disappeared live Professors Rodney and Emily Harris. They are the picture of bourgeois respectability: married octogenarians, devoted to each other, and semi-retired lifelong academics. But they are also harboring a shocking, unholy secret in the basement of their well-kept, book-lined home, one that may be related to Bonnie’s disappearance. And it will prove nearly impossible to discover what they are up to…for they are savvy, they are patient, and they are ruthless. Now Holly must summon all of her formidable talents to outthink and outmaneuver these unimaginably depraved and brilliantly disguised adversaries in this chilling and unforgettable masterwork from Stephen King.

Don’t let the right wingers turn you off this book. The narration was spot on, and it was a well written masterfully told story! I love Stephen King, and it’s not even about the horror it’s about his excellent writing. He doesn’t say or reflect anything that isn’t happening in . our world today. He’s just giving characters a voice of the people that are in our world today.

Fantastic!

I've loved SK since I was in high school. I spent summers binging his books. I never cared about his politics. it was his characters and settings that always felt lived in and relatable. Holly is an awesome character, and I was looking forward to this new chapter for her. I don't want to be brow beat with the political views right or left. I just wanted a great story. Maybe next time.

Very Disappointed

Loved going on this ride with Stephen. He never disappoints. Holly is one of my favorite characters. So happy to see an old friend again.

Loved it.

I love Stephen King. It is not the content I disliked, except the COVID stuff a little, but Mr. King writes in the moment, so it makes sense given the time. The problem for me is that I have been getting to know Holly through two book series. Will Patton is a magical narrator and that is how I have come to know Holly. Through Will's narration. Holly is a very particular, very special person with quirks and issues and loves and hates and the voice given to her in previous books made that clear. The Holly in this book is "normal" ?? Holly has been body snatched. I think that will make sense to those who have listened to the other books. This Holly is not the Holly that I was looking forward to. I am disappointed enough to mention all of this and sort of annoyed I used the credit. I purchased this book first and then thought I should lead up to it, but I never noticed the different narrator. My mistake, I admit. I have waited a while to get to this "grand finale" and this imposter Holly is vanilla. Plus, although the narrator did well, she had a cold or something and sounded nasally at times, which is poopie. :) Please know that this book has a different vibe than the previous books. with love,

NOT the Holly Gibney I have gotten to know.

I liked the story and the performance of Justine Lupe, televisions Holly. King needs to ease up on the politics. I don't particularly care for the preaching and I am pretty sure he insulted about 60 to 70 million people in this one .

Too much politics, great story

A truly captivating story that includes real life events, as the author himself states, makes the story more believable. It felt relevant to the characters and the story. If there’s personal offense to this (as stated by some reviewers over covid & vaccines), it’s more telling of the reader, not the author.
This story serves as a reminder that beliefs can cause people to rationalize their most horrific acts-very relevant to the current state of things.

The mind is a terrible things…

I found the story slow paced and boring. I sure didn't like having more covid propaganda shoved down my throat. The bad guys in the story don't feel evil or all that crazy to be honest. After the things Holly has been through this feels like a very poor story. Could be the new boring narrator but this book feels like a filler episode about the adventures of a covid fearing leftist that lost her knack. Forget her father Holly has forgotten the face of Bill Hodges! Also bring back Will Patton.

Boring.... narrator is no Holly!

Mr.King, you are an amazing writer, half of my library is your books, but don’t spread your stupid political agenda to your readers. This is not why we read your novels, it is a shame you wasted so many words on this crap.

Good story, way too political

Once again King knocks it out of the park. The symbolism in this book was visceral on so many levels. Personally loved the new narrator’s take on Holly’s voice and expression. Highly recommend.

Amazing

WARNING you won’t be able to put this book down until you read it from cover to cover.
In classic King style, he brings back a familiar character and expands the scope of the character.
It’s a fantastic read .

Once again, Stephen king delivers
