About this listen

Steven Scott is relatively new to horses. A successful, wealthy inventor, he takes up horse racing as a hobby - a hobby that soon brings him winner after winner under the inspired guidance of his trainer, Jody Leeds. Currently both their reputations are wrapped up in a beautiful black hurdler named Energise. But just when Steven is winning at both women and horses, he discovers deceit in his own stables. Termination of the troublemaker marks Steven for his own termination - and much sooner than he can imagine...©1975 by Dick Frances (P)1995 by Blackstone Audiobooks Europe Great Britain Suspense Thriller & Suspense Exciting Sports Fiction

High Stakes is another wonderful story from Dick Francis that shouldn't be missed. Geoffrey Howard does a very good job with the narration and makes the audible experience an enjoyable 5+ hours of storytelling.

Another wonderful read

I absolutely love Dick Francis.
I absolutely love this narrator.
What I don’t love is the reality. I want the bad guys to suffer. I want people to know he/she was right. I want “them”
to be vindicated.
My favorite genre, and the qualities I admire are inevitably British born. And yet, good manners in the face of injustice is frustrating.
In the end, most is put right, but rarely in a manner I find thoroughly fulfilling.
I actually had the good fortune to meet Mr. (Sir?) Francis in Middleburg Virginia as a student at Foxcroft. In one of his previous books I believe the names of both were used for characters.

gripping

One of the shorter inches and the Dick Francis cannon, this particular mystery/thriller catch has plenty of twists and high stakes actions.

Taut with brilliant thrills

Though this is not my favorite Dick Francis novel, it was a rather different approach focusing on a horse owner rather than jockey, but it allowed for an intriguing look into owners/trainers and stable practices. Plot didn't really get going until quite a ways along, but when it did, I was holding my breath till the end!

Slow race at start roars to exciting finish

Love the mystery, the turns and twists, the romance and, above all, love the horses!

Classic Dick Francis

High Stakes differs from Francis’s typical fare. Here we know the villain all along. His protagonist is interesting and Francis’s gift for a well-turned phrase makes me smile a second time through.

Francis has a gift.

outside of doing lottery, and playing numbers a lot of young people cannot relate to the live action of horse racing, and dog racing. so for historical factors, this is a really great storyline and valuable. I really appreciate it the narration by Geoffrey Howard.

a good story for back in the day
