About this listen

If you only listen to one thriller this year....

"A great modern gothic. Ellison outdid herself - what an ending!" (Catherine Coulter, number one NYT best-selling author of VORTEX)

Fast-paced and brilliantly unpredictable, J.T. Ellison’s breathtaking new novel invites you to a wedding none will forget - and some won’t survive.

Jutting from sparkling turquoise waters off the Italian coast, Isle Isola is an idyllic setting for a wedding. In the majestic cliff-top villa owned by the wealthy Compton family, up-and-coming artist Claire Hunter will marry handsome, charming Jack Compton, surrounded by close family, intimate friends…and a host of dark secrets.

From the moment Claire sets foot on the island, something seems amiss. Skeletal remains have just been found. There are other, newer disturbances, too. Menacing texts. A ruined wedding dress. And one troubling shadow hanging over Claire’s otherwise blissful relationship - the strange mystery surrounding Jack’s first wife.

Then a raging storm descends, the power goes out - and the real terror begins....

You won't be able to guess what happens in the end!

Great storyline and characters! I couldn’t stop listening to this book. Don’t buy into the negative reviews. Listen to this book!

Even though the majority story takes place over just a few days, it was packed full of excitement to keep you guessing! One I couldn't put down!

Well Written & Continuously Exciting!

Chose this as a credit due to narrator. For me the story was good and did keep me intrigued, however the ending was a bit of a letdown and fairly predictable. The characters were enjoyable. If you’re wanting to read about a wedding in Italy with Italian food and landscape, this isn’t that book, but a good murder mystery taking place around a castle like villa on a cliff.

A favorite narrator

At first I was super into the book, but then it was so very predictable. The narrator was fantastic and is what kept me going until the end.

Narrator was fantastic

Okay, this wasn’t my favorite, but it was at least worth listening through to the end. That said, I rarely give up on a book. It is a thriller, so it does go pretty quickly, and the descriptions of house and scenery do their job in transporting you somewhere you’d rather be (well, aside from all the murder, that is). There’s a lot of “flash” (brand name dropping, technology, money money money) put in to show you these people are wealthy and after awhile the descriptions of every high-end name brand product got tedious. There were also a few plot, character description inconsistencies but those are forgivable, though annoying. There are a lot of red herrings to throw you off, even though you’re pretty sure you know what’s going on throughout the whole story. And to top it all off, there’s a perfectly imperfect MC who doesn’t quite fit in to this put-together family with her “messy” bun and Converse sneakers. I might not mention this if half the MCs in books lately weren’t artists who would be models if they could just get past the messy bun and Converse. We get it, she’s down-to-earth.

That’s all fine. It’s a beach read thriller. But here’s what drove me crazy the WHOLE way through the book…

If I’m going to read a modernized retelling of a classic, I’d like it to at least mention that’s what it is in the description. This story has so many major components, plot points, and details in common with a major classic that there’s really no way around that being the author’s intent. Though it doesn’t change the story, if I had known what it was going on I wouldn’t have spent so much time thinking “wait a minute… this sounds an awful lot like…” and I might have saved it for a time when I felt like reading a book where I already knew the basics of the plot. Instead of being shocked or surprised by some of the actions of characters or the way certain scenes played out, I knew exactly what would happen going into a scene. I don’t hold this against the author, I feel she was done a disservice by the marketing team. The description should flat out state that the book is a retelling.

Overall, entertaining enough to keep my attention, but not one I’ll recommend as a favorite from this year.

Rewriting the classics…

oof. Painful listen, but I managed to finish during a road trip. Narration was spot on.

Painful

Filled with twists and turns! You won't want to stop listening as the story unfolds. The comradery amongst the brothers is genuine and makes you grin, thinking of your brothers or cousins. Cheers to the strong women of this novel ~ taking care of business! You'll be happy with this choice!

Intriguing...
