About this listen

Twenty years ago, Melanie Stokes was abandoned in a Boston hospital, then adopted by a wealthy young couple. Gifted with loving parents, a doting brother, and an indulgent uncle, Melanie has always considered herself lucky. Until the first cryptic, threatening note arrives: “You Get What You Deserve.”

Melanie has no memory of her life before the adoption. Now someone wants her to remember it all - even the darkest nightmare the Stokes family ever faced: the murder of their first daughter. As Melanie pursues every lead and chases every shadow in search of her real identity, two seemingly unrelated events from her past will come together in a dangerous explosion of truth.

Too much was left for the last chapter and epilogue

Too much was left for the last chapter and epilogue. I found it dragged and then at the last minute, everything gets solved.

Kept you engaged and easy to listen

Loved this book. Kept you guessing. Sweet love story but no explicit sex scenes and only mild foul language. Such a joy to listen to a mystery and romance where there was nothing to be annoyed or irritated about. No author political leanings to endure. Looking forward to trying more Lisa Gardner books. Narrator was great!

Not what was expected - and not in a bad way

Interesting twists and turns at the end. My only complaint is that the relationship between the main character and the FBI agent was completely pointless and wasted time, detracting from the story.

Violence and Steamy Love Scenes Don't Always Mix

The premise of the story was very intriguing and kept me listening to the end, even though there were parts that felt totally off-key. I have no argument with violence in a twisty, high-stakes thriller (as long as it serves the story). And I have no argument with a steamy love scene between two consenting adults caught up in a dangerous intrigue. But ... I don't know. The mix here felt wrong. The timing and tone didn't work for me.

Should be a movie

This is not my favorite Brittany Presley performance. The book has too many characters for one person to read. For that reason, I found it hard to follow. Needing to listen to some chapters multiple times. Maybe the story is a little far-fetched too... Keeps you guessing. I do like that about it.

One Great Book. A must read.

Loved this book. one of the best books I have read in a long long time.
It keeps you on your toes and you just can't put it down. The ending was not what I expected but much better.
The narrator was absolutely fantastic. I will look for other books she has read for.

Full of twists and turns.

As with all the Lisa Gardner books I've read, this one keeps you guessing. Every time you think you have it figured out some new twist changes everything. Brittany Pressley is a good narrator for this story.
