About this listen

A clandestine race of half-dragon, half-humans known as dragon-shifters lives among us. Bastian, leader of the Nightfury dragon clan, is sworn to protect humankind at all costs. For him, honor and duty always come first. When the clan dictates he take a human mate to sire a son, he falters, aware that for a human to birth a dragon-shifter she must die. Myst, the woman given into his care, is the most extraordinary he’s ever met, and though he can’t bear the thought of harming her, he is bound by duty.

Myst loves her life in the human world, but Bastian has captured her heart in an instant of electric connection. But Bastian and his warriors are in the middle of a deadly battle with the Razorback dragon-shifters, intent on killing every Nightfury clan member - and the humans they protect - the fate of their world and ours hangs in the balance. An extraordinary blend of action, fantasy, and steamy romance, Fury of Fire brings to life a dangerous new world intertwined with the survival of humanity, all while exploring the meaning of honor and the nature of true love.

A FANTASTIC FANTASY SERIES STARTS OFF

I've come into this series a bit late having just found it and, as I love anything 'Shifter' I thought I'd give it a try (despite the mixed reviews) and I was very happy I did.

Firstly, let me start by saying I didn't like the basis of the story:- a Dagon-shifter finding a high energy woman to impregnate and bear him a child then die - not an endearing quality you want from your hero. But thankfully Bastian, the Leader of the Nightfury Clan, realised this was wrong and regretted his actions towards Myst albeit a little too late and happily made amends.... with some surprising consequences.

However, I loved the Dragon-shifter world - a brotherhood made up of lots of handsome, leather clad badass Alpha types wearing shit kickers together with all the snappy quick dialogue and funny banter that went with it and I guess that's where the similarities between Ward's brilliant, awesome and, IMHO cannot be beaten, BDB can be found. But set that series aside as this is a good and worthy listen and there's plenty of action, passion, sex, romance and conflicts between the Nightfury Clan (good Dragons) and the hated Razorback Clan (evil Dragons with a hate and kill all the Humans, agenda).

The product placement peed me off a bit as did the WTF question when the heroine just drove off from the Lair which was supposed to be in a cliff and magically protected with an impenetrable force field around it? However, I overlooked these flaws because of the enjoyment factor I got from the rest of the action-packed story.

Worth a credit? I would have been happy if I'd spent a credit on this but at under $10 for a 12 hour listen I saved my credit for a more costly listen and so I just bought it - and don't regret it.

Loved It

This series is about dragons and I must say it was written like JR Ward which is one of my favorite authors so how can I not love this series...

A good listen..

Where does Fury of Fire rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Not as good as any of the others but that's only because this is my first by a male narrator. He did a good job but a man just can't do a woman's voice so I won't be listening to the other books in this series.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Bastian

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Yes

Any additional comments?

It was a good book. I wish I could have enjoyed it more but, as I said, I can't really enjoy a male narrater.

Great Story, Wrong Narrator

If you're a fan of JR Wards Black Dagger Brotherhood, this is a similar story with dragons. Collahan's style is similar in personality and the fact that the alpha males stand no chance against falling for their mates.

The narrator is good. He can do the accents and carry the story, but his voice for the characters is too high. If he could narrate in the tenor of Jim Frangione it would have been perfect. These are warriors, and he makes them sound like dweebs.

I just wasn’t into it!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙🖤💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗
World building: 🌏🌍🌎
Character development: 😠😘🤓
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Solo Narration

The heroine: Myst - she is a nurse practitioner who has been working fourteen-hour days. She worked out of Seattle Medical Center, but also did home visits. She loved her job and loved helping people but wanted more for her life. She wouldn’t mind coming home to someone to love and that loved her.

The Hero: Bastian - he is the leader of the Nightfury dragon clan. They are and have warring with the Razorback dragon shifters, who want to kill all the Nightfury dragons and the humans they protect. Bastian is sworn to protect all humans, but he is also at a point in his life when he is supposed to sire an heir, he needs to help replenish their numbers. He is troubled by the fact that the only way to sire an heir is to mate with a human, though any human who gives birth to a dragon-shifter will die in the process.

The Story: when Myst goes on a home visit to check on a pregnant client, she finds the girl dying on the kitchen floor. Myst is forced to cut the baby out once the mother dies and Bastien comes in dressed as an EMT. Bastien and his clan take Myst once the Razorback dragons attack them to try to get the baby. He takes her to his home. He knows she is his from the start and that she is very strong.

Some parts of this story were a bit confusing. Apparently, the dragons feed off the energy of humans and it has something to do with how strong the human females' connection to the prime meridian or electrical impulses of earth or something like that. I guess Myst had a stronger connection than anyone else.

The leader of the Razorback dragons, Ivar was the big bad in this book. He did all kinds of nefarious things, such as planned a breeding program for his dragons using strong human females, Myst included. He also was working on virus warfare against humans to eliminate all the weak humans from Earth. While Bastien felt too much and didn’t want to get Myst pregnant knowing it would kill her.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view via solo narration. It was narrated by Benjamin L. Darcie, who has a deep, expressive voice. He does a good job and is pleasant to listen to. I have to say, I kept getting bored during this one and I fell asleep more than once, which I was pretty depressed about since I bought more than a few audiobooks in this series. It will probably be a while before I take on another. Thought it could have just been tiredness and my mood today. Though I usually love dragon shifter stories.

Fury and Fire is a dynamic, fast moving tale with strong characters.

I liked the way Callahan interspurses the characters thought and background a bit at a time as she moves them through their allotted place in her imaginative, suspense filled storyline.

A bit of a rip off...

I can see how this book would be a good listen for someone who's never read JR Ward before, but as a huge fan of hers, this book honestly disappointed me. The writing style has a very strong resemblance to Ms. Ward's, not to mention some of the character's and
similarities in dialogue. Some of the terms and phrases used are very popular in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, and it felt like I was listening to a watered down version of it.

That being said, I did enjoy the plot, but when it comes to this kind of novel, I'll stick to the Master- JR Ward's done it already, and done it right.

Keep Your Expectations Low

Too much modern slang for my tastes, and the leading lady was annoying at times. I truly will never understand why all of these beautiful single women abducted by stunningly gorgeous supernatural males are so determined to go back to their mundane lives. I'm happily married and I'd be hard pressed to deny Bastian, even with the whole I-need-to-impregnate-you-with-my-killer-dragon thing he has going on.

But I digress. If you're bored and or not yet jaded, it's ten bucks. Get it, keep your expectations low, and it's actually not too bad. I'll probably even read the second one.
