About this listen

One constant in the world has always been change. Mankind as a species, and you and I, are where we are today because of how we adapted to the challenges posed by the changes we have had to face. American history is full of examples of change and how that change affected the country and its people. At one time people traveled across the country using covered wagons. A trip from Philadelphia to San Francisco could take months. Soon, covered wagons were replaced by trains which reduced travel time from months to days. Before long the trains were replaced by airplanes which reduced the travel time from days to only a few hours. You might say that those were changes that were easy to adapt to. However, the people that made their living selling covered wagons may have had a different opinion, depending on their ability or willingness to adapt.
There is an unending list of changes that have taken place over the years. Each of those examples of change ended in the same way, those that were able to adapt or change, survived, those that couldn’t change or who refused to adapt, did not. We can only hope as a species, and as individuals, that we never face a change so extreme that we may not be able to adapt. But that is exactly what Mike Higgins and all of mankind found themselves facing.

Mike Higgins was a smart guy, but he never thought of himself as being smart, he preferred to think of himself as a survivor. He had met and overcome many challenges in his life, the most recent being the loss of his comfortable, high paying job at the bank. But being the kind of guy he was, he adapted and found another job. It wasn’t the job he wanted to do for the rest of his life, but until he found the job he wanted, he did what he had to do to support his family. He would do whatever it would take to give his wife and two small children the kind of life they deserved. He had no doubts that he could do it, because he had always found a way to get things done. He was a survivor. He believed that if he used his head and worked hard, it would happen. He had always been sure he could find a way to not only survive, but he would find a way to make life even better than it had been before.
That was before he received a phone call from his neighbor Carl, at 2:30 AM one morning, making the craziest request he had ever heard. Mike didn’t know it at the time, but that call was the beginning of the biggest change he would ever face in his lifetime. Not only was it the biggest challenge he would ever face, but it was the most painful, devastating experience that any man could ever go through. It was a change that would challenge Mike’s belief that he could survive anything if he put his mind to it.
The story starts one year after Mike received that late night phone call and how he did what he had to do to adapt. Of course, as things turned out, Mike was a true survivor. Using a practical joke pulled on him by his friend Carl, a little luck and a lot of imagination, Mike found a way to even survive the Zombie Apocalypse.
