About this listen

Abby and Hetty are best friends. Aren't they?

A deliciously dark novel about the unravelling of a friendship, for fans of Liane Moriarty, Taylor Jenkins Reid and Donna Tartt. Narrated by Nicola Coughlan (Derry Girls, Bridgerton).

Life’s not going well for forty-year-old Abby. When her beautiful and charismatic best friend dies suddenly, she’s left reeling. Hetty’s always been such a dominant force in her life; now Abby must figure out who she is – and who she wants to be – without Hetty by her side. Abby has always been the odd one out in Hetty’s wealthy, privileged friendship group.

Despite their differences, Abby has managed to carve out a place for herself. But Hetty isn’t an easy friend to have. She blows hot and cold, alternating between fierce loyalty and unwarranted cruelty. Abby accepts both versions of Hetty, just grateful for the attention … until she’s not. From divorces and weddings, via awkward dinner parties and dead-end relationships, to soul-sucking first jobs and dubious flatshares, Abby recounts the story of her great friendship with Hetty in reverse.

Finally, we meet Abby and Hetty when they first meet each other: as fresh-faced eighteen-year-olds with their whole lives ahead of them…and no idea of the tragedy that lies ahead.

The personalities of each character.

I liked Penny and her very interesting persona. Each character was unique but connected with each other.

Binge worthy, must listen until the end!

At first, I found some of the characters annoying. However, I was wonderfully surprised at the development over the course of the story. It’s a must listen until the end.

Liked the characters, story a little lacking

There is a lot of potential in this book. Character development really keeps the book going. The plot incorporates past and present but there seems to be a disconnect and just not liking some of the characters rather than understanding how friendships begin and then ycan unravel. The surprise twist at the end certainly helped!

Narration was good. At times it was difficult to initially determine who was the specific voice though.

Complexities of friendship over time makes for a great listen

I really liked the idea of the book and took a chance on it before others reviews could sway my opinion. So glad I did. The author is an excellent writer and the characters really came alive. I could see this as a movie or limited series as I found myself wanting more of each character. Also the narration was perfect.

Well written and unpredictable!

This was a very cleverly plotted novel that was narrated expertly. The story moved along briskly and the main character was so appealing. Highly recommend!

Great!

The random song at beginning of the book was reallu weird and sort of off putting by I kept going! This turned out to be an awesome listen! Super engaging, great story line and character development in a shorter book.

Glad I stuck with it.

This was, as expected, a beautiful performance. Nevertheless, I started wondering what the point was about halfway through. It seemed liked various memories of an unhappy life and toxic friendship. I hear enough of that in real life. Then some more intriguing characters and twists had promise. Delivered an intriguing ending that I want to ponder. Well worth your listen.

Nicola’s performance is an award winning one

The story took us to places I didn’t expect in the beginning. Kudos for choosing Nicola for this audiobook. A lesser actress wouldn’t be able to go to the places she went with this. I felt every frustration and disappointment. I need a movie and a second book.

Very Nice Listen!

Being a free offering, I went into this not expecting much. I was happily surprised. Narration and story were both great. It is a bit predictable but doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment. This is a solid four star book, IMO. Not too shabby for a freebie.

Great story/characters and performance!

Nicola Coughlan gives a fantastic performance - well worth a listen for any fan as she shows her undeniable talent and range voicing a range of Irish, American and British characters young and old, male and female. My only complaint is that I wanted the character of Max to feature more often to hear more of Nicola’s Wigan accent!

The story itself will surely satisfy anyone looking for a UK-based murder mystery plot - the writer builds the characters and drama well towards a climactic ending back at the loch - no spoilers but an interesting ending!

I also really enjoyed following the main character Abigail’s journey as she navigates life as an Irish working class Gen X/Millennial in London, running a stressful wedding photography business with her less than amazing partner Adam. I identified with Abigail’s class anxiety throughout the book, it was great to have a character talk about some of the shame felt when discussing money and work with those who have never had to struggle. The writer does a great job explaining Abigail’s relationship with Hetty through reminiscing about impromptu house parties and stolen clothes during their university days in Scotland, and I enjoyed the Penny / Landlady mentor character as a sort of slightly less cold modern day Miss Havisham, but maybe that was just Nicola Coughlan’s accent (!). In summary a great listen/read, hopefully the first of many for this writer!
