About this listen

From New York Times best-selling author Peter F. Hamilton comes his first audio original, A Hole in the Sky, Book 1 in the Arkship Trilogy.

Sixteen-year old Hazel lives in the Daedalus, a starship that is flying in search of a new world. The ship has been traveling for 500 years, searching for a world to settle in after having to abandon its last world. Everyone on board Daedalus lives a very simple existence in farming villages. The age of machines supplying their needs was lost during a mutiny 500 years ago. The captain regained control of the ship after a huge struggle. Now, with finite resources, everything in the habitat is Cycled, including humans, who essentially are suicided at 65 so they don't deplete the biosphere's resources.

Hazel encounters the Cheaters, people who refused to Cycle, who tell her the Daedalus has been damaged and its atmosphere is leaking away. When her brother has a paralyzing accident which condemns him to be Cycled since he can no longer be productive, Hazel runs off with him to join the Cheaters. While with the Cheaters, she discovers that much of what has been told to the people living on Daedalus for the last 500 years is untrue, and soon, Hazel is in a thrilling race to help repair the ship and help the people of the Daedalus.

What listeners say about A Hole in the Sky

Highly rated for:

The Story Revolves Around A Young Protagonist Living On A Generation Ship That Has Been Traveling For Centuries. While The Premise And World-building Are Praised As Imaginative And Intriguing, The Plot Is Criticized As Predictable And The Characters As Flat And Lacking Depth. The Overall Tone Is Described As Juvenile, Catering To A Young Adult Audience. Despite These Criticisms, Some Reviewers Found The Space Adventure And Sense Of Wonder Enjoyable, Though Not Up To The Author's Usual Standards.

Definitely not the authors best work.

PFH has some magnificent stories and is one of my favorite authors. This series has a great concept, but the characters are constantly saying and doing things that make no sense at all. There’s practically none of the wit and attention to detail that I love about PFH’s stories. I’ve listened to the first two books in the series and this one seems phoned in. I won’t be continuing the series.

i just couldn't finish

maybe (most likely, to be honest) it's just me, but i couldn't finish this book. I tried. the narration is alright, but th story is sooo boring, easy to predict, no surprises. the characters are of the typical Hamilton cardboard cutouts, no depth to them. i tried many of Hamilton's works from different series but i always regret wasting money on it. :(

If you like jurvenile writing and YA story...

Wish I'd skipped this one, honestly. The writing is subpar and feels like the product of an earnest and inexperienced undergrad. The story is just a bit too tired, too already done, too YA. Ugh. There are good writers writing good stories, and Hamilton sometimes, is in that ballpark. Not this go, however. Read Tchaikovsky or Corey, or ... you get it.

Another FANTASTIC Hamilton Novel!

Hamilton has yet to disappoint!!! Although I wish the book was longer, it was a wonderful book and I can’t wait for the next in this series!! He does an amazing job developing the characters and storyline so you feel like you are part of the story! I have read and loved everything he’s ever written and I’m looking forward to enjoying this series as he continues it in the future!!

story is okay reading is terrible

I love Hamilton's books and was excited to start it. Only a few minutes in I didn't think I could listen for another minute. I think a computer is easier to listen to. I persevered and I liked the story, but think it would be a lot better reading a paper copy. I later read some reviews and many said the same thing so beware. Tantor, re-record this book with a different narrator.

classic sci fi adventure

good science, high adventure, oriented toward young adults so, not as very very adult as many of PFH's works but , I liked it all the same. the narration was quite good I thought. appropriate to the context and character. this story has an innocence that is a call back to early sci fi adventures of the old masters. disregard the neg reviews. its PFH for tiger pansie's sake. enjoy.

I love Hamilton's work, this one is ok, but not up to his usual quality. it's pretty predictable

Glad I stuck with it

I stuck with it, When the book started I was expecting a remake of Logan’s run from the initial story line but then it quickly evolved into something completely different. Then it did again. It certainly made for a truly interesting and enjoyable story.

Excellent and interesting!

Yes, it's more young adult... but that's what also makes excellent and interesting! Original premise and world building. Female lead role and character development. What else can you ask for?
