About this listen

From the master of the space opera comes a dark, mind-bending adventure spread across time and space, where Doctor Silas Coade is tasked with keeping his crew safe as they adventure across the galaxy in search of a mysterious artifact.

In the 1800s, a sailing ship crashes off the coast of Norway. In the 1900s, a Zepellin explores an icy canyon in Antarctica. In the far future, a spaceship sets out for an alien artifact. Each excursion goes horribly wrong. And on every journey, Dr. Silas Coade is the physician, but only Silas seems to realize that these events keep repeating themselves. And it's up to him to figure out why and how. And how to stop it all from happening again.

Full of adventure, with a side of deeper meaning

I’m already a fan of Alastair Reynolds work, and this may be one of his best. The sense of adventure is palpable, with the intertwining story weaving just enough questions and answers to keep the reader wondering. When the final reveals come, they are laced with questions that make the reader think. All any good science fiction can deliver.

The narration is outstanding, with accents and personalities leaping off the “Page”

Great Story and Reader

This clever tale grabbed me right from the beginning as Alastair Reynolds stories often do. it starts as something that resembles Master & Commander as told from the doctor's view, but ends as something quite different. I don't know if I've heard the reader before but he was perfect for this mix of characters. Well done!

Great book, fantastic audio

I loved this story, I’m a lifelong Alastair Reynolds fan and this is one of his best books. Gripping, thrilling, tons of fun, it’s a real page-turner! The audio production in this is also exceptional, above and beyond even the usual fine work created for Reynolds. The performance, the quality, all stellar. Highly recommended.

Taking Identity Exploration to the Next Level

A fun tale that takes place in multiple times with same named characters and ships.

At least until we find out the real "current era" space adventure.

Then is when we learn this novel is about what almost all of Reynolds' books are about: identity. And it is a fun new look at this time honored Reynolds theme.

It was over way too soon and the narration was perfect. I will listen to this many times. Well worth the credit.

Strange story surprisingly deep

Don’t let the description fool you into thinking the story is repetitive it certainly isn’t. But it’s fascinating to compare similarities between the protagonist’s experiences and to tie them all together. The book also has some frustrating points and some real heart. I really enjoyed this read. The narrator was fantastic in his separating characters through voice and accent. And at one appropriate point I think he had a genuinely emotional reaction to the story as he read it. That part was more experience than story.

Good start, slow ending

Started very interesting, although the hook has been used many times, but got bogged down in the last quarter of the story. I also found several of the narrator's voicings to be irritating. Some narrators use a whispery, gravelly voice for characters that you'd never hear from a human, and it grates.

Original and compelling. Well written.

I love the authors work and Eversion didn’t disappoint. Previous reviews compare the work to other stories and of course there are similarities but this story was so well done it stands on it own. I particularly loved the style of writing and tone matched the current time period covered in the book. The ending was very satisfying. Will read it again.

Slow start amazing end

I want to say I truly enjoyed this book I think the narration was great and he really emphasized and put heart to some of the dialogue that really enhanced the story. in my title I said it has a slow start and that is true it took me half an hour or so mainly getting past half of the first arc to really start going okay this is getting good. if you think it's boring please stick to it because once act 2 begins I was enjoying it. The ending was very touching and man I wish I could say what it makes me think of but it would spoil it so I would just say the ending was great I enjoyed the last 2 hours of the book was highly enjoyable. in terms of sci-fi books this one's a quick one so give it a listen you won't be disappointed.
