About this listen

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The eccentric detective Ana Dolabra matches wits with a seemingly omniscient adversary in this brilliant fantasy-mystery from the author of The Tainted Cup.

“Wonderfully clever and compulsively readable . . . another winning blend of fantasy and classic detection.”—Publishers Weekly

In the canton of Yarrowdale, at the very edge of the Empire’s reach, a Treasury officer has disappeared into thin air—vanishing from a room within a heavily guarded tower, its door and windows locked from the inside.

To solve the case, the Empire calls on its most brilliant and mercurial detective, the great Ana Dolabra. At her side, as always, is her bemused assistant Dinios Kol.

Ana soon discovers that they are investigating not a disappearance but a murder—and one of surpassing cunning, carried out by an opponent who can pass through warded doors like a ghost.

Worse still, the killer may be targeting the high-security compound known as the Shroud, where the Empire harvests fallen titans for the volatile magic found in their blood. Should it fall, the Empire itself will grind to a halt, robbed of the magic that allows its wheels of power to turn.

Din has seen his superior solve impossible cases before. But as the death toll grows and their quarry predicts each of Ana’s moves with uncanny foresight, he fears that she has at last met an enemy she can’t defeat.

This narrator!

I am still hearing the character's voices in my head. He made a very good story even better.

Another Brilliant Story! Love This Narrator!

I finished the 1st book in a matter of days and have been impatiently waiting for the 2nd to come out and now I will be impatiently awaiting the 3rd!

This book exceeded my already high expectations and I thoroughly enjoyed it!!! Even funnier than the 1st book! Very satisfied with how the mystery was laid out and solved.

The author builds such a complex world but explains it all in a way that feels so natural, I’m never struggling to understand it, I can picture it all so clearly.

I really love Ana and Din and all the other characters introduced (specifically Malo). I can’t wait to read more!

The narrator is PERFECT and really adds to the experience. I love having the 1st book (and now 2nd) on as background noise because he voice for Din is so pleasant to listen to. His voice for female characters is excellent and natural and never takes me out of the story (some narrators can’t do voices for characters of the opposite sex well and it’s distracting)

Don't skip the author's note at the end!!

A stunning story of deceit and betrayal and the expert nosing out of the crimes and criminals by the team of Ana and Din. The side characters were fully fleshed out and contributed much to the main plot. RJB has once again stunned his readers with a magnificent story. The narrator Andrew Fallaize has it all: The unique voices, proper timing, and an excellent all around voice. I hope there will be a continuation of this series with Andrew as the narrator. Highly, highly recommended!

Clever and twisting story

I really enjoyed this tale. The characters don't always make the best decisions, but they make sense for their portrayals. Ana and Din make excellent partners, and Din has become more confident in his role as investigator. His attempts to ride herd on his superior were amusing. I think the narrator was also very good and added to the story.

Phenomenal

The story is incredible and Robert Jackson Bennett is a poetic, thoughtful author. I could hardly put it down. My only note, and it is perhaps more a fault of mine: I hear "Arna" every time the narrator says "Ana"

A great story with great characters!

First: Great narration! That can make or break a book, and for me this really worked 😊

For the story: I’m not usually a fan of detective stories, but this one is marvelously well done! I loved every minute of the first book, and I loved every minute of this one! This is an interesting story masterfully told. I really like the pacing, and how you are kept guessing until the end. It also stays away from the most obvious boring cliches. Highly recommend this book. I will actually go out and buy an actual copy of this for my bookshelf. Can’t wait for the next one! And I will probably reread this at some point.

Outstanding.

Excellent followup to The Tainted Cup.

Ana and Din are investigating the disappearance and then murder of an imperial treasury agent when it turns into a plot that could bring down the heart of the empire itself.

Robert Jackson Bennett is so very good with his characters. Main characters and side characters alike feel so fleshed out, with their own quirks and mannerisms and ideals.

I also really appreciate how the world is teased out of the plot as it hums along at a steady pace, and in a way that doesn't have you working through info-dumps, while also leaving so much open for possibilities or later explanations.

This is an auto-buy author for me, and I am eager for more in this world.
