Justin Garson is a professor of philosophy at Hunter College and The Graduate Center, City University of New York. His main interest is in exploring how biology can help us make progress on traditional problems of human nature. He has authored or co-authored dozens of scholarly articles on the philosophy of science, the history of neuroscience and medicine, and biodiversity conservation. His first book, The Biological Mind: A Philosophical Introduction (Routledge, 2015), shows how philosophical reflection on biology is crucial for solving long-standing puzzles of the human mind, such as altruism, consciousness, language and meaning, mental disorder, free will, and the role of nature and nurture in shaping our lives. The second edition of 2022 adds three new chapters on philosophical problems of race, sex, and human nature. His second book, A Critical Overview of Biological Functions (Springer, 2016), provides an overview of the controversial biological functions debate in philosophy. His most third book, What Biological Functions Are and Why They Matter (Cambridge University Press, 2019), develops a novel position on that debate and works out its implications for philosophy of mind and medicine. His most recent book, Madness: A Philosophical Exploration (Oxford, 2022) re-envisions the history of madness as a clash between those who see madness as a disease and those who see it as having a purpose. He is also an editor of The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy of Biodiversity (Routledge, 2017).
