In April 2001, a million gallons of water disappeared from Barnes Pond, in SW London, overnight. In April 2019, Hammersmith Bridge was closed without notice, indefinitely, the day after the boat race when twenty thousand fans gathered there to cheer Oxford and Cambridge crews. Five years later the bridge remains closed. Both events have had a profound impact on my life taking me into community and charity, fundraising and the arts and inevitably, politics both local and national. Seeing these events through the eyes of my two little girls led me to try to recreate their world for posterity. Inspired by Julia Donaldson's fabulous books in rhyme, which we read together, these souvenirs of our precious family time, wrote themselves in verse. A degree in English and Philosophy, a Marketing Diploma and an MBA , time studying as a teacher for a PGCE, all played their part in leading me towards a career in business for Mars and the RAC, followed by family and then work in charities from City Harvest, The Children's Trust, Home-Start, Kingston Charitable Foundation and Barnes Community Association and mentoring for The Princes Trust and various local universities and representation on various school boards and more recently a local hospital board. After family and community and politics come our lovely dogs and if I'm not dog walking in Richmond Park, I'm probably seeking out one of my husband's lovely pubs!
