Elizabeth J. Rosenthal's newest book, due out on April 29, 2025, is The Master of Drums: Gene Krupa and the Music He Gave the World (Citadel Press). The Master of Drums is the first definitive biography of Gene Krupa, the most famous drummer on the planet, whose feverish rhythms leapt across genres to change music forever. From jazz to the Swing Era, to rock and roll, The Master of Drums recounts the pioneering drummer's exploits, challenges, and accomplishments, while framing him against not just his fellow musicians and peers but the music industry and general culture as a whole. The Master of Drums is a celebratory, honest, and exhaustively researched portrait of a twentieth-century music legend whose acolytes would include such rock-era artists as Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, John Bonham, and Apollo 440. When he died, Gene Krupa may have left behind a world of grieving friends, colleagues, fans, students, and progeny, but as The Master of Drums proves, his dynamic musical and cultural influences live on. Elizabeth J. Rosenthal's previous work, its release timed to coincide with the Centenary of Roger Tory Peterson's birth in 2008, was Birdwatcher: The Life of Roger Tory Peterson (Lyons Press). Birdwatcher is a thorough portrait of Peterson, one of the greatest conservationists of the Twentieth Century, as well as an accomplished artist, photographer, writer, teacher, and adventurer, and the man who made modern birding possible. The author's first book, His Song: the Musical Journey of Elton John (Billboard Books), was published in fall 2001. As the most well-researched, exhaustive musical biography of musician Elton John ever written, His Song was the only John biography to have been sold in the Elton John Store at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, during his hugely successful Red Piano run of shows earlier this century. About Elizabeth J. Rosenthal:. After graduating magna cum laude with a journalism degree from Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1982, Rosenthal attended Rutgers-Camden School of Law, from which she graduated With Honors in 1985. Subsequently, she was admitted to the bars of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In 1986, she married Stanley Shur, another Rutgers-Camden graduate. She is retired from New Jersey State government after 28 years of service.
