D.C. Winter spent over a decade as an international journalist covering climate, infrastructure, and political instability across four continents. Their perspective on preparedness was fundamentally shaped by six months in an overseas prison after being falsely accused of CIA involvement while serving in the Peace Corps – an experience that taught them firsthand how quickly systems can unravel and the importance of community resilience. After returning to the States and witnessing the cascading crises of the early 2020s, Winter realized that reporting on problems wasn't enough. Drawing on their unique background bridging worlds – from environmental activism to emergency response, from overseas development to homesteading – they began organizing underground community resilience workshops that brought together unlikely allies across political divides. Now based somewhere in New England, Winter divides their time between consulting on community resilience projects, teaching sustainable agriculture, and maintaining a demonstration homestead that serves as a training center for practical preparation methods. Their articles on community resilience have appeared in various environmental and progressive publications under different names. Winter holds advanced degrees in Environmental Science and International Development, along with certificates in emergency management and permaculture design. They help coordinate several regional resilience networks while maintaining a low profile to protect the privacy of their preparation community. Beyond their preparation work, Winter writes about the intersection of environmental justice, community resilience, and practical preparation. They live in a mostly off-grid home with their partner (an ER nurse), a flock of heritage breed chickens, and an extensive food forest that feeds both their household and their neighbors. Winter remains deliberately vague about their exact location and identity to protect both their privacy and the network of progressive preparation communities they help support. This is their first book under this name.
