Haelewise has always lived under the shadow of her mother, Hedda—a woman who will do anything to keep her daughter protected. For with her strange black eyes and even stranger fainting spells, Haelewise is shunned by her village, and her only solace lies in the stories her mother tells of child-stealing witches, of princes in wolf-skins, of an ancient tower cloaked in mist, where women will find shelter if they are brave enough to seek it. Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Took me a few false starts...
Started this a few times and could not get in to it so I had to put it down and start something else. But I came back time after time probably a lot to do with Bianca Amato as she is one of my top ten narrators. (Hard to pick one favorite narrator as I love so many so there are many FAVORITES of equal measure that fall into the same line as well as some that are favorites because the story they read is one of my faves... It's complicated!) but I am happy that in the end I did come back to try again because for whatever reason the last time it clicked. While perhaps it will never be known as a fantastic piece of literature it definitely IS a fun read.

I couldn't stop listening!
What did you love best about Dracula in Love?
I really enjoyed the author's take on Dracula's origins and his and Mina's connection (and the origin of their relationship). I also felt that the author accurately portrayed the abuse of what when on in asylum's and the primitive view on women during the Victorian era, not that was enjoyable, but I appreciated the realism which led to the suspension of disbelief, but even more than that, this is a version that I could actually believe really happened! (mabey)"
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dracula in Love?
When Mina's memories return to her and we learn of her connection to Dracula
What does Bianca Amato bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She did an AMAZING job, her British accent completely enhanced the story since it takes place in England and parts of Ireland. If I had just read it, I would have heard it in my mind with my own American accent thus detracting from the enjoyment of story. Her charater voices were also amazing!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
"The re-telling of a Classic, from Mina's point of view!"
Any additional comments?
I must confess I've never read (or listened to) Bram Stoker's book, only seen various movies from the book (I'm thinking of the Gary Oldman version in particular). This story had all the same elements with different explinations of the events that took place in the original story.
Although I can't think of a better title as I'm reviewing this, I really don't like the title for this story. I've read on Good Reads website others feel this was a story more about sex than love, I tend to disagree, I found Dracula's bond to Mina very romantic, but mabey that's just me. And although there were many scenes of a sexual nature, there was nothing IMHO that was lewd (which is so prominent in vampire stories).
The feminist in me felt so competely outraged at times in listening to this story, but I feel this lent to the credibility of the story, because the attitudes surely did exist in those days, just a heads up if you are sensitive to this sort of thing.

Gothic vibe - check
Dang, so much better than I could have ever imagined. First, it was our book club pick for October --I haven’t cherished any form of love w/their selections in the past year – so it was a good cerebral shocker with this choice.
First of all, read Bram Stoker's actual book before you read this story. It will make all the difference I believe.
That said, this hit the mark for a gothic retelling of Dracula, tho, from Mina voice. I was absolutely floored that I could clearly see a very decent line that linked the two stories – nice job. And the twists from Mina's voice was contemporary yet, goth Victorian-esque. The author reveals at the end of the novel that she dug up actual Victorian medical transcripts/manual to thrust in the interesting plot conflicts.
But the lewd sex scenes, eeekk. A bit stomach-turning at times – especially since I wasn’t expecting it. Not sure why the author went this route but I’m guessing it will definitely make her story stand out in the genre.
Not sure who I would recommend this to but for a book club read, it’s a unicorn. I asked the moderator did she know about the sex scenes and she went pale. LOL, can’t wait for the gathering!!! I’m sure all the one & two stars are just but I doubt many of readers read the original and can’t see how the author stayed within the lines to write her retelling.
