About this listen

Some houses hold secrets that are meant to be kept forever...

When Eliza Sullivan inherits an estate from a recently deceased aunt, she leaves behind a grievous and guilt-ridden past in New Orleans for rural England and a fresh start. Eliza arrives at her new home and finds herself falling for the mysterious lord of Havenwood, Malcolm Winfield. Despite the sinister rumors that surround him, Eliza is drawn to his melancholy charm and his crumbling, once-beautiful mansion. With enough love, she thinks, both man and manor could be repaired.

Not long into their marriage, Eliza fears that she should have listened to the locals. There’s something terribly wrong at Havenwood Manor: Forbidden rooms. Ghostly whispers in the shadows. Strangely guarded servants. And Malcolm’s threatening moods, as changeable as night and day.

As Eliza delves deeper into Malcolm’s troubling history, the dark secrets she unearths gain a frightening power. Has she married a man or a monster? For Eliza, uncovering the truth will either save her or destroy her.

“If you love a gothic tale full of twists and turns and things that go bump in the night, Paulette Kennedy’s Parting the Veil is a not-to-be-missed treat. This debut is the perfect book to curl up with on a stormy night, but don’t expect to put it down easily. And don’t forget the Earl Grey and biscuits.”—Barbara Davis, bestselling author of The Last of the Moon Girls

I enjoyed this book, but as the story progressed, I started to get more confused. I didn’t fully understand what was happening with Malcom. Then trying to decide if what he was able to do and murder his family. Then she kept asking for the truth, and when he told it to her, she was flipping out. It was very dramatic at times, but also quite the mysterious and enjoyable

Quite the Book!

This story was beautifully read in audible by Siiri Scott! I loved Eliza and her strengths even though she was pregnant towards the end I was surprised she didn't miscarry after what she went through. The story of Ada and Bea was surprising. I loved it all and will read more books from Paulette Kennedy.

Amazing

Story moved too slowly. A few too many storylines going on. Narrator did a good job, particularly on the Scottish accent.

Just okay for me

This book was fantastic! But the real props here need to go to the incredible narrator! She flawlessly transitioned from a southern accent to a British one, then Scottish, and Irish, male, female....she did such an amazing job!

Excellent Story, Incredible Narrator

I enjoyed this story from beginning to end. I realized what was happening before the main character did but I was still on the edge of my seat waiting to know what happens.

After the death of her parents, Eliza and her sister arrive in England for a fresh start and to take ownership of a home that was left to Eliza.

Her new home requires some repairs but with her sister by her side, she feels ready to take on this project.

Some of the local are friendly. But others only see her as competition for the eligible bachelors in town.

She is drawn to Malcolm. And when the other suitor threatens him they decide that marriage is the best way to protect themselves.

Once they move into his damaged estate odd things begin to happen.

Perfect little spooky read

This would be hard to stick to If it weren't for the author's writing talents. The story is compelling and adventurous in the beginning, but there is a lull in the middle. However, there is a twist at the end that will blow your mind. Loved it.

Slow but the Ending Makes it All Worth It

Wasn't what I expected. From the title I thought maybe it had to do with the fae. But as far as ghosts, that was only a part of the story. Eliza and her sister move to England from New Orleans. she has a fortune to inherit but only if she marries soon. Will her mysterious neighbor be all that she hopes for? They are in love but his personality changes at the drop of a hat. His huge house is supposedly haunted, which Eliza experiences. very spooky.

I liked the book and it kept my interest but the whole part of her staying out of the south wing and other areas was too overdone. it got monotonous. I was so ready for it to be over. I listened to to audio and read some. if I'd only read it, I would've skipped ahead. if not for this being drug out, it would've been 5 stars. with that being said, I would still highly recommend it. it's different from anything I've read. certainly takes you back in time and helps you understand how things were for Women.

The narrator was superb! love it so much.
