About this listen

The Riverlands is a region whose vast lands have hosted states of many names over the years: the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Habsburg Realms, Yugoslavia, Dacia, Swabia... It is a region whose inhabitants are often united only by their shared challenges of encroaching outsiders, lack of oceanic trade, and fiercely independent cultures. On the Riverlands Podcast we will cover the development of this beautiful land from the Early Medieval Period to the modern day. We will focus on all aspects of development, from the political history and numerous conflicts, to the many societal changes and constants. Along the way we will see what we can learn about economics, culture, religion, statecraft, and more!

The region of the Riverlands today includes the proud nations of: Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Western Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia, Austria, Southern Germany, and Switzerland. Over the course of the podcast, we will grow and develop with all of them.

On this episode we start the podcast by examining what is meant by the term, "The Riverlands". We introduce the land via its 7 mighty rivers, and go over some features that unite the region throughout all of history and its various states and cultures. We also introduce the first series, which will cover the history of the region preceding the early medieval period, and some key repeating influences which will shape the Riverlands into the future.
