Cancer Season Continued: Borders, Belonging & Broken Systems: The Unspoken Reasons for Immigration.

As we move through Cancer season, we hold our attention on the politics of home, country and family through the topic of immigration. In this episode, I talk with immigration lawyer Diana Moller to examine history, reasons for immigrating, economics, labor, and the abomination of for-profit detention centers. I weave in the Cancer archetype and in particular note the axis it shares with Capricorn.

This week’s episode continues our exploration of Cancer season themes—home, belonging, and care—through the lens of immigration.
I speak with immigration lawyer Lisa Seifert to discuss the many facets of immigration in the U.S. We talk about the different types of legal documentation, what it means that being undocumented is a civil—not criminal—offense, how communities can hold ICE accountable, and recent headlines. We also explore how immigrants contribute billions in taxes and the significance of sanctuary cities in offering protection and support.

As we approach the 4th of July—a day that marks the birth of the United States and also highlights that this country is astrologically a Cancer—I invite you to reflect deeply.

Unless you are Native American, your family came from somewhere else. We are a nation of immigrants.
This holiday is an opportunity to ask:
What does patriotism truly mean?
Who makes up this country?
What are we really celebrating?
What are the stories—of migration, displacement, and survival—that brought us here?

And crucially, what are the ongoing consequences of colonization, especially for Native peoples, whose lands were taken to form what we now call the United States?

In today’s episode I speak with birth worker, parenting coach, doula and writer, Marissa Bolaños of Womb Revolution. Today, we’re continuing our exploration of Gemini by bringing in its opposite on the zodiac axis—Sagittarius, the philosopher and professor—through a conversation with two of my favorite people: Professors Shaw Osha and Hugo Flores from The Evergreen State College. Both are brilliant thinkers, artists/ musicians, and bilingual speakers. Shaw teaches visual art, and Hugo teaches and leads the Spanish department.

In our conversation, we explored approaches to critical thinking that challenge our tendency toward immediate analysis, interpretation, and repetition. Shaw and Hugo both use teaching methods that encourage students to slow down and sit with what’s right in front of them—resisting the urge for quick conclusions or easy answers.

Their insights reminded me of the mythological characters we explored last week—Hermes and Narada—both known for challenging assumptions and disrupting habitual ways of thinking and noticing where our thinking has become automatic or overly simplistic. In a culture that values speed and certainty, it seems all too easy for our critical thinking muscles to weaken, but if we can allow for some discomfort the learning and growth potential is great!
