About this listen

Stories are a big part of the African culture and growing up in the city of Port-Harcourt, these stories shaped my childhood. Times are different now and these bedtime stories which were passed down through generations are not as popular with children as they once were. This podcast aims to bring these stories to the new generation of African children and introduce everyone else to these wonderful stories from the motherland. The lessons and values learnt from these will never be forgotten. Welcome to Stories Mother Told.Stories Mother Told Literature & Fiction

  • Sudanese Folktale: Fatna And The Ghoul
    May 25 2025

Today's story is a special one from Sudan. Hana Baba, from the podcast "Folktales from Sudan", tells us a story of how a clever girl named Fatna finds herself face-to-face with a terrifying ghoul, it’s not strength or speed that saves her - it’s her wit.

Every night, Mohamed returns home from work singing a special tune - one only his sister, Fatna, would recognize. It’s their routine, their safety. But one night, someone else is singing that same song.

This is well written and told. Perfect inflection and emphasis. I felt as if I was there

Excellent first story.

Enjoyed every episode. The voice is a man of color not AI. I appreciate the real sound of an African descent voice and cadence that is not nasal colonial fake sound.

Well Done, Beautiful African Descent Voice!

The first thing narrator’s voice is boring; monotonous. No life. I started the first story and listened and just couldn’t continue; for the narrator’s voice was not engaging, to me.

Boring Narrator’s voice.
