S3E24: Overtime Podcast: Season 3 - Ep 24 - Ron Hextall

  • Summary

  • Ron Hextall is one of the best goaltenders to play in the NHL in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. He played 13 seasons and built a reputation for being “intense, unhinged, and very talented". Ron is best remembered as a Philadelphia Flyer where he is still the holder of multiple team goaltending records to this day. He is also the NHL record holder for most penalty minutes in both in a single season, and for all-time career penalty minutes which includes 6 fighting majors. Hextall is also a goaltending “pioneer” - credited to be amongst the first goalies to develop strong puck handling skills, which is now an expected skill for all NHL goaltenders. He became the first goaltender in NHL history to score a goal by shooting it into the opponent’s net, and is the only goalie to have done it twice in NHL history. In 1997 he won both the Vezina Trophy and the Conn Smythe Trophy, one of 3 only Goaltenders in NHL history to win both awards in the same season
