In an interview on Michael Rosenbaum's podcast, director James Gunn confirmed that both David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult screen-tested for the role of Superman in his upcoming film, Superman. Both actors did full auditions in the Superman suit.

Ultimately, Corenswet was cast as Superman, while Hoult was cast as the villain, Lex Luthor. Gunn clarified that it wasn't a case of the runner-up getting the other part. He stated that from the beginning, Corenswet was his top choice for Superman and Hoult was his top choice for Lex Luthor, and the audition process simply confirmed his casting instincts for both roles.

The film, which also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, recently had its title changed from Superman: Legacy to simply Superman and is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.
