• MMHP Season 5 Ep:19--Dr. Ed Roth: Michigan's Music Therapist Connects Notes Part 2 of 2
    Apr 17 2025

Drummer Dr. Ed Roth found a way to connect his music with everyone, like no one else before. The Bridgeport/Saginaw area musician studied music at Western Michigan University. And while he can't claim a gold or platinum album in his Michigan Music History, he can claim that he studies the music and how it connects to the minds of individuals, at every stage of life.

His detailed work dives into the musical dopamine from birth to hospice/end of life, covering what connects and why. Music is so important to everyone, as you will hear, that we are "all born musicians." This very special two-part series is as humorous as it is important and integral to life as we know it, and why music is the natural drug. Part two gives you some epic procedures and studies that Dr. Roth has come to know across his work.

We were so happy to have Sir Fred's nephew and this deep conversation. Tune into Episode 2 today!

  • MMHP Season 5 Ep:15--*BONUS EPISODE*--Four Years of MMHP in the 989!
    Mar 3 2025

    Where has the time gone?!!

We began coming straight out of the Covid closures in the back of Alan Garcia's garage podcast studio in Essexville in February of 2021. Now we fire up in our new comfy confines of the Bay City Historical Museum Second Floor where the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends displays can be witnessed. When we first moved to the Museum, you could hear us trying areas, tables, spaces. Now we have our own 'couch relaxed' room, boom mic'd and offering even more quality as our MMHP989 brand continues to expand by word of mouth from music lover to music lover, musician to musician, fan to DJ, author to Podcaster. We are 118 episodes deep according to Apple Podcasting--sounds about right!

Because of YOU listeners and our first class guests, we are getting requests from more music legends now to help tell their story and be featured on our show. As we roll into year four, we plan to expand the horizons and look at our show from other angles. The best is yet to come!

In our four year catch up, Dr. J dishes out the details behind our new first class operation, discusses state of the state of the amazing Michigan Rock Hall (have you visited it yet?), we talk about our joy of the show and how its reached beyond the state of Michigan, and we get a deep dive into an artist whom has passed away from Saginaw, songwriter Bob Buchanan who wrote the great Hickory Wind with the late Gram Parsons while on a train, members of the International Submarine Band. Told only as Sir Fred can, bruises and all! We are lucky to have this outlet for this story--so stick around for it. Sit back and celebrate our Fourth Anniversary with the MMHP989!

  • MMHP Season 5 Ep:14--Gary Taylor: A Michigan Polka Legend & HIFI Sounds
    Feb 20 2025

Gary Taylor is not the average 'roll out the barrel' or 'oberek' artist. Performing state wide with some regional trips since the 1960s, Taylor found himself in great company while at Handy High School in the early '60s. Able to play saxophones and clarinet, Taylor was a first call artist, getting gigs and rubbing elbows with many of the Michigan polka legends.

Taylor ran his own band coming out of the Pat Lepeak and The Starliners as the '70s progressed, headlining polka festivals and achieving freedom as a multi-talented bandleader. Always in search of 'better mixes' and perfect 'lathe cut vinyl' for his projects, Taylor was able to release one collectible 45 as a headliner as Gary Taylor & The Happy Knights. His stories start at the Art Schiell home recording studio (which ? & The Mysterians put on the map). From there, he ventured to Detroit and around studio to studio, cutting parts and searching for his sound. Having hung up his woodwinds in the '90s, Taylor is an audiophile, listening to all types of music, and reveling in the perfect polka sounds. This is his story...
