  • BAD and DIFFICULT Movies - Dr. Matt Strohl
    Jun 25 2025

This is episode two of the John Evans podcast where we talk about philosophy, psychology, movies, and other stuff. Today’s guest is Matt Strohl.

Matt received his PhD in Philosophy from Princeton University and is a professor at the University of Montana where he teaches ethics, ancient philosophy, and aesthetics. He’s also a cinephile and he’s written two books, the first being WHY IT’S OKAY TO LOVE BAD MOVIES and the second is called HARD TO WATCH: HOW TO FALL IN LOVE WITH DIFFICULT MOVIES.

We talk about his books, mostly focusing on bad movies and why they’re great. We also talk about directors’ late work and if he perceives a drop in quality as directors get older, we talk about woke movies and anti-woke critics. We talk about violence against women in film and any ethical implications. And other stuff.

Thank you Matt for being on the show. You can find Matt’s work at strohltopia.com and you can also find him blogging about movies and art on aestheticsforbirds.com.

Nothing is dull with Matt Strohl.
