About this listen
"Let George Do It" was a popular American radio drama series that aired from October 18, 1946, to September 27, 1954. It was produced by Owen and Pauline Vinson.
Plot Summary: The show centered around George Valentine, a private investigator who advertised his services with a unique classified ad: "Personal notice: Danger's my stock-in-trade. If the job's too tough for you to handle, you've got a job for me, George Valentine. Write full details!"
Initially, the series had a lighter, more comedic tone, with George being a "freelance troubleshooter" involved in a variety of cases, including romantic and family dramas. However, it quickly evolved into a suspenseful, tough-guy private eye series, dealing with murders, blackmail, kidnappings, and other crimes. George Valentine was portrayed as an intelligent, thinking man who preferred analytical investigation to brute force.
Main Cast:
- George Valentine: Primarily played by Bob Bailey, who later gained further fame as the lead in "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar." Olan Soule took over the role in the final year (1954).
- Claire Brooks, aka Brooksie (George's secretary): Played by several actresses, most notably Frances Robinson and Virginia Gregg.
- Lieutenant Riley (George's police nemesis): Played by Wally Maher.
- Sonny (Brooksie's kid brother and George's office boy): Played by Eddie Firestone, Jr.
- Caleb (elevator operator and handyman): Played by Joseph Kearns.
The series was sponsored by Standard Oil and was broadcast on the West Coast Mutual Broadcasting System. Its distinctive blend of mystery, drama, and occasional humor made it a beloved classic of Old Time Radio.
