Morry Frenkel speaks with Katia Ariel, author of the memoir, The Swift Dark Tide, which was short-listed for the prestigious Stella prize in 2024, and the recently published Ferryman: The Life and Deathwork of Ephraim Finch, the biography of a remarkable man who devoted 30 years of his life to the service of the Jewish community while working at the Melbourne Chevra Kadisha. Katia talks about how she came to write Ferryman, the effect on her of interacting with Ephraim, observing the love he felt when he described consoling the bereaved, and the responsibility she felt in writing about these experiences. Katia also speaks about the role Cas – Ephraim’s wife - has played in his life by enabling him to give himself almost wholly to the community while at the same time being an integral part of local Jewish life herself. Both The Swift Dark Tide and Ferryman: The Life and Deathwork of Ephraim Finch are available in bookstores and through the internet, and are highly recommended.

Morry Frenkel speaks with A/Prof Les Schreiber, Associate Professor of medicine at the University of Sydney, about the reasons behind his decision to publicly criticise the recent actions of university students who turned their backs on Jewish students seeking support to stamp out on-campus anti-Semitism and were defending the existence of the Jewish state, as well as the general lack of action by the university’s administration against on-campus antisemitism. This lack of effective action has led to some faculty members leaving the university and has potential students questioning whether attending the University of Sydney is their best option for continuing their studies. Les also condemned the involvement of some faculty members in newsletters that contained virulently anti-Zionist material and called for a single Palestinian state, although the university has now clamped down on this activity. Les also reported on the ‘behind-the-scenes’ activity of the Australian Academic Alliance Against Antisemitism (the 5A group) since its formation in November, 2023.
