While we are focusing on the protests against mass deportation of immigrants, are we remembering to ask the important underlying questions? When looking for a nanny, a construction worker or a day laborer, do we carefully examine their legal status? Do we ask if illegal immigrants picked the vegetables we are eating? Are we aware of how historically business has taken advantage of “illegal aliens” and have we looked at the economic contributions of immigrants? Have we considered how we are dehumanizing ourselves by our treatment of people who have been integrated in our society? Do we even know the legal status of our own parents, grandparents and great grandparents, if they were immigrants? And finally, do we have first-hand experience with undocumented workers?
