Nato a Catania nel 1878, Marchesi si forma come intellettuale democratico e aderisce presto al socialismo. Professore universitario, giunge a Padova nel 1923. Durante il fascismo mantiene rapporti con il Partito Comunista, entrando attivamente nella Resistenza dopo l’8 settembre 1943.
