    For most of us, success is defined by the message we receive from our culture. Those success markers are usually money, status and possessions.

    External markers of success won’t give you what you’re really looking for.

    Success isn’t something you achieve.

    It's who you are.

    It's your birthright.

    Don’t worry — if you’ve believed work causes your stress, you’re not alone. I used to think that too.

    Most lawyers assume their overwhelm is caused by the files, the emails, the clients, and the court dates. But let’s try something:

    Imagine a file sitting on your co-worker’s desk.

    Does that file stress you out?
    Does it make you feel overwhelmed?

    No.

    Why not?

    Because the file isn’t the problem — it’s what you think about that file that creates your stress.

    Overwhelm doesn’t come from the work. It comes from how you're thinking about the work.
