עיקר ופנימיות התורה הוא – שהיא חכמתו ורצונו ית', "ואהי' אצלו גו' שעשועים גו'", ולשם זה צ"ל לימוד התורה. אבל כאשר לימוד התורה הוא באופן שמערב בו פניות ומציאות עצמו, כגון על מנת שיקרא רב או באופן של "קרדום לחפור בו" בנוגע לעניני פרנסה, ה"ז בחי' "אחוריים" דתורה. לכל א' צ"ל משך זמן בכל יום שבו ילמד תורה "לשמה" ללא שום תכלית חיצונית. ואלו שביכלתם – יקדישו לכך משך זמן של כמה שבועות, חדשים ושנים. ישנם כאלה אשר עם היותם שמגדלים זקן שלם (שהו"ע י"ג תיקוני תיקנא, שכנגדם הם י"ג התיבות שבפסוק והוא רחום יכפר עון וגו') ומ"מ קשה להם לעמוד בנסיון זה... [אם דברים אלו יפעלו עליהם מכאן ולהבא – אינני יודע, אבל אני צריך לומר את שלי]; ואלו שלא יכולים לעשות זאת תמיד בעצמם – ישנו על זה הענין ד"תומכי' מאושר", "תמכין דאורייתא" – שיתנדבו מממונם להחזקת אלו שלומדים בתורה באופן האמור.

The core and inner dimension of Torah is that it is Hashem’s wisdom and will, “I was...His delight,” and one must study Torah for that purpose. In contrast, when one studies Torah with ulterior motives and his own existence in mind, such as studying “in order to be called ‘Rabbi’” or as a “spade to dig with” – that is the external dimension of Torah. Everyone must designate time each day to study Torah for its own sake, without any external purpose, and those who are able to, should dedicate an extended period of several weeks, months, or years for this purpose. There are those who, despite having a full beard (which represents the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy, corresponding to the thirteen words in the verse “And He, being compassionate, pardons iniquity...”), nonetheless find it difficult to withstand this test...(I don’t know whether these words will have an effect on them from now on, but I have to say what I have to say); those who cannot always do it themselves should contribute to support those who study Torah in the abovementioned manner – “those who support it are fortunate.”
