[המשך] כמקור לענין כללי הנ"ל, שה"חכם" (יהודי) צ"ל ניכר גם "במעשיו באכילתו ושתייתו", מובאים ב' מאמרים: 1) "כל מעשיך יהיו לשם שמים". דפירושו, שהוא אוכל ושותה (לדוגמא) בכוונה שלאחר וע"י האכילה ושתי' יוכל ללמוד יותר טוב. אבל ה"מעשה" עצמו אינו עבודת ה'. 2) "בכל דרכיך דעהו", שזהו עבודה נעלית יותר: ש"בכל דרכיך" גופא "דעהו" – שמתקשר ע"י זה להקב"ה ע"י בירור הניצוצות שבמאכל וכיו"ב. ועד"ז אופן העסק במשא-ומתן של יהודי הלומד נגלה וחסידות אינו רק כדי שעי"ז יוכל אח"כ לתת צדקה, אלא מרגיש אלקות בעת עסקיו גופא – "דעהו". והנהגה זו שייכת לכל ישראל, אלא כדי להגיע לזה ה"ז "מן הקל אל הכבד", עי"ז שמתחיל את יומו עם ההכרה ש"שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד", וזה נותן לו את הכוח שכל היום (לא רק בעת התורה והתפלה, אלא) גם "בכל דרכיך", יהי' "שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד".

Two teachings are cited as a source for the idea that “A wise man” (a Jew) must be recognizable even “in his actions, in his eating and drinking”: (1) “All your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven,” which means that one eats and drinks etc. with the intention that afterwards he will be able to learn better etc., but the deed itself is not part of his service of Hashem. (2) “Know Him in all your ways,” which refers to a loftier form of service where one “knows Him” within “all your ways” themselves, meaning one connects to Hashem while eating and drinking by elevating the sparks of holiness in the food and drink etc., and similarly one does business not merely to be able to give tzedakah later, but rather he senses G-dliness within his business itself. This service is attainable for every Jew, but one must go “from the easier to the more difficult”; beginning one’s day with, “I have set Hashem before me always,” gives a person the strength to “have set Hashem before me always,” not just during Torah study and davening, but “in all your ways.”
