「ヴィヨンの妻」は破滅型の夫と彼を支える妻を巡る世界のえも言われぬおかしみと哀しさを醸し出す太宰晩年の短編の傑作。酔った夫が、店の金を盗んだことをきっかけに妻は夫婦の店で働き始める。 椿屋の「さっちゃん」として、店は賑わいをみせていくが・・・。「桜桃」は、 有名な「子供より親が大事、と思いたい。」で始まる。太宰自殺直前の遺作で、これにちなんで、桜桃忌が6月19日に開かれる。葉桜のころになるときっと想い出す若くして結核で死んだ妹のことを回想する「葉桜と魔笛」。「お別れ致します。あなたは嘘ばかりついていました」…両親の反対を押し切って、金や名誉には無関心に見えた若手画家に嫁いだものの、日に日に俗物化していく夫に幻滅し、遂に別れる決心をするに至る「きりぎりす」。夫の肺の療養で禁欲を余儀なくされてきた奥様が、医者からお許しが出た喜びを描く「満願」。万引きして捕まった少女が、自分中心の論理で懸命に言い募り、最後は両親との小さな団欒に幸せを見出す「燈籠」。 他に、「フォスフォレッセンス」「鴎」の佳作2編を収録。
