内田百けんは、漱石の弟子で軽妙洒脱、ときには毒舌の随筆で知られるが、他方で無類の鉄道好きで、元祖「鉄ちゃん」ともいえる存在。その「阿房列車」シリーズは、多数の読者を得ているが、この「特別阿房列車」はその第一弾で、終戦からの復興期の昭和26年に書かれ話題をさらった名著である。
東京から大阪まで、「特急はと」の一等に乗るためだけに、多額の借金をし、着いた途端に戻ってくる。道連れは、国鉄に務める「ヒマラヤ山系」君。口数が少ない彼との間で交わされるとぼけた会話が可笑しい。
