日本は人口当たりの病院数がＯＥＣＤ加盟国中２位の「病院過剰」国である。しかも患者数（人口）は減少していく。
最近、赤字病院が増えているというのも、医療費を抑制する政策によって収入が増えないのに、人手不足や働き方改革で人件費が膨らんでいることが理由に挙げられている。
通っていた病院が突然なくなる。そんなことが不思議ではない時代がやってくるかもしれない。経営が安定しないと医療の質は保てない。人口減少、コスト上昇で病院の大再編が迫っている。
