About this listen

George Webber, a first-time author, writes a book that makes frequent references to his home town of Libya Hill. The book is a success, except in Libya Hill, where the residents believe that it paints an extremely distorted portrait of their town. They send Webber menacing letters, including death threats.

As another reviewer wrote, this isn't the book. It's an abridged NBC broadcast of the story. I was disappointed.

Disappointed

Loved the performances, and I adored the themes, but the ending was a bit lacking

Pretty darn good

Sadly, this is just a summary of the novel. Yet, it captures the essence. The acting in the recording is of fairly low standard. The recording is scratchy and poor, too. Yet, the novel has substance that deserves to a part of Audible. The book deserves better.

It is a summary of the novel

I foolishly acquired this synopsis of Thomas Wolfe's "You Can't Go Home Again". I was excited about chapter 2, etc. only to discover audible doesn't have the entire book available. What a disappointment! It looks like other Audible listeners were duped, too.

Deception

The musical interlude’s volume was so loud I had to turn down the audio every time it came on. Then the characters can’t be heard until the volume is turned back up.
This goes on for the full hour.

My wife tells me this is a great book which had an impact on her life. You sure couldn’t tell it by this version. To be fair, I thoughtI was ordering the whole book, not this short mishmash of vignettes which I assume were short scenes therein. The theme of the book was spoken several times but only very simplistically represented by a few of the scenes. The worst part was the obnoxious, loud, and over dramatic music played whenever there was a pause in the narrative which, most of the time, seemed completely out of sync with the narrative. That was worse than the continuous scratchy background making it sound like you were listening to an old record. I only paid $3 for this but I don’t think it was worth even that.

Should not have been attempted

This is the first Wolfe novel I’ve read (listened to) and I loved it. I’ll have to get the unabridged version of it to get the full picture, but the actors performed very well in this, well worth the listen.

Not the whole book but a great performance of it

I love Thomas Wolfe and this a a good story but this version is abridged and the audio quality is terrible. It has that crackling noise in the background and it's painful to listen to.

Terrible Audio Quality

why are people doing bad copies of old scratchy records and selling them on audible?
i thought there was some rudimentary quality control and i was wrong.
this static filled rendering of an old album comes complete with a scratch and repeated dialog about half way through.
most excellently dissappointed

worthless at any ptice
