About this listen
THE INSTANT #1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
A Good Housekeeping "Book We're Most Looking Forward To" * An Independent Today "Best Fiction Books to Read" * A GQ Magazine (UK) "Best Book of 2024" * A Harper’s Bazaar (UK) "Best Novels to Read" * A Daily Record "Best Novel"
"Captivating [and] flawless...An affectingly hard-won romance. [Michael is] a sturdy and slyly amusing authority figure, … flailing amid the debris of a loving marriage gone sour. Marnie is a compulsively witty, winningly cranky near-agoraphobe...Both protagonists are prickly, smart and desperately yearning, but utterly guarded for understandably good reasons. Nicholls builds his own erotic and at times wrenchingly emotional suspense as the would-be lovers reveal past mishaps and surrendered dreams... As in the best romances, we cherish Michael’s and Marnie’s difficult personalities, and relish the unlikely process that might bring them together. The novel is sharp-tongued and irresistible."—New York Times Book Review
"I finished this novel in two breathless sittings, as invested in its outcome as I would be in the happiness of a friend. This is the magic of You Are Here: warm, generous and funny, it invites readers into the world of Marnie and Michael with the promise that everyone is welcome, and that choosing happiness and being courageous in any small way we can is always possible. I loved this book."—Kaliane Bradley, author of The Ministry of Time
From the internationally bestselling and Booker Prize-longlisted author of One Day, one of the most enduring love stories of its generation, comes an uplifting and unputdownable love story about second chances.
Sometimes you need to get lost to find your way . . .
Michael is coming undone. Adrift after his wife's departure, he has begun taking himself on long, solitary walks across the English countryside. Becoming ever more reclusive, he’ll do anything to avoid his empty house.
Marnie, on the other hand, is stuck. Hiding alone in her London flat, she avoids old friends and any reminders of her rotten, selfish ex-husband. Curled up with a good book, she’s battling the long afternoons of a life that feels like it’s passing her by.
When a persistent mutual friend and some very unpredictable weather conspire to toss Michael and Marnie together on the most epic of ten-day hikes, neither of them can think of anything worse. Until, of course, they discover exactly what they’ve been looking for.
Michael and Marnie are on the precipice of a bright future . . . if they can survive the journey.
A hilarious, hopeful, and heartwarming love story—the novel beloved New York Times bestselling author David Nicholls calls “my funniest book yet”—You Are Here is a bittersweet and hopeful story of first encounters, second chances, and finding the way home.

Story
Frederick Fife was born with an extra helping of kindness in his heart. If he borrowed your car, he’d return it washed with a full tank of gas. The problem is there’s nobody left in Fred’s life to borrow from. At eighty-two, he’s desperately lonely, broke, and on the brink of homelessness. But Fred’s luck changes when, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, he takes the place of grumpy Bernard Greer at the local nursing home. Now he has warm meals in his belly and a roof over his head—as long as his poker face is in better shape than his prostate and that his look-alike never turns up.

Your autonomic nervous system is responsible for the constant but mostly subconscious communication between your brain and body. When you experience stress, anxiety, or trauma, your nervous system formulates responses to keep you alive. But you can also become trapped in survival mode if you’re consistently exposed to unsafe environments, toxic relationships, or destructive thought patterns. Mind-body practitioners Jen Mann and Karden Rabin now provide the first in-depth look at nervous system regulation, somatic therapy, Polyvagal theory, the vagus nerve, and the mind-body connection.

Douglas Petersen may be mild-mannered, but behind his reserve lies a sense of humor that seduces beautiful Connie into a second date...and eventually into marriage. Now, almost three decades later, they live more or less happily in the London suburbs with their moody seventeen year-old son, Albie. Then Connie tells him she thinks she wants a divorce. The timing couldn’t be worse. Connie has planned a month-long tour of European capitals, a chance to experience the world’s greatest works of art as a family, and she can’t bring herself to cancel. And maybe going ahead is for the best anyway? Douglas is privately convinced that this landmark trip will rekindle the romance in the marriage, and might even help him to bond with Albie. Narrated from Douglas’s endearingly honest, slyly witty, and at times achingly optimistic point of view, Us is the story of a man trying to rescue his relationship with the woman he loves, and learning how to get closer to a son who’s always felt like a stranger.

Thirty-two-year-old actor Stephen C. McQueen (no, not that Steve McQueen) is waiting for his big break. His only screen credits so far are playing dead bodies on cop and doctor shows. At the moment, he's paying the rent by understudying hot movie star Josh Harper, who's trying to gain dramatic credibility in a West End play. If only Josh would miss a performance, Stephen-with-a-P-H could prove his talent and redeem himself in the eyes of his disapproving ex-wife and their precocious seven-year-old daughter.

For them, it's an outdated concept that never worked particularly well in the first place.

Slow build
The characters, their story, their building chemistry (pharmacy?- inside joke) builds slowly as they meander across the country. Never exhilarating but something catches and has you wanting more — of them, for them…and so we soldier on with them, and hope they will one day reach the sea.
Reminded me of Before Sunrise trilogy in how the honest discussions between two people can lead to more, but they first have to realize what’s the truth to themselves.

Took a while to catch my interest
I almost gave up on this. Might’ve been better if I had re-read the summary right before I started reading. I couldn’t quite figure out the point of it all until about 1/3 of the way through.
After that, I did get invested in the protagonists. And, it ended up being an interesting, compelling story.

Romantic without being corny
I enjoyed this poignant story from beginning to end and found myself rooting for Marnie and Michael to succeed. Their internal dialogue was so relatable and their banter funny and charming. It was a joy to watch their characters' evolution from flawed and fearful to opening up their hearts enough to let each other in.. The narrators were perfect and gave life to the characters. I loved I'll be looking for other books by David Nichols

I'm so sad I finished!
I miss Marnie and Michael already! The characters were so fleshed out and seemed to be people I would know in real life. This book is sweet, poignant, funny and aspirational. Already planning a UK hiking adventure in my head. Utterly fabulous, and a wonderful change from my typical psychological thriller/mystery genre. The narrators were perfect and only enhanced the story. I'd give this ten stars if I could. Bravo!

I loved it.
This is a lovely book—sort of what I’d expected from the description—and I enjoyed the whole bloody thing. I’d probably even read it again in a year or so, but then I’m one of those people who actually read hiking books. My only query, and perhaps I’ve misremembered the mileage details, but I think it takes longer than 10 or 12 days to hike the Wainwright across Britain.

a walk to get to know you
First time author for me.
Several people get together for a walk across England, some part of the way, others the whole way. Some match making was being done by the organizer and a woman who was supposed to show didn't and a man who did show left early. So, the two left behind start to get to know each other and find they like each other, a lot. They end up walking together by themselves for several days of the walk and start telling each other about their lives. It turns out that's a great way to get to know someone intimately in a very short amount of time.
Not a thriller of any kind but rather a story of human nature, two people divorced and lonely coming out of their shells.
The writing style was pretty witty, and I found myself thinking a lot of the observations made in the book actually tied into my life. It was a fun, entertaining listen.

Charming little story of second chances
I don’t know who recommended this to me, but I am grateful! It’s a little story of two sad people finding one another, and maybe some love. The woman is witty and hilarious, and the narration perfectly captured both of them. Loved this!!

Romantic Wannabes
Loved the plot, the bits of geology, inner thoughts. Lyrical writing. I found the audible well-done but the British accent a bit too thick for me to follow with ease. Beside that one difficulty, I highly recommend the book.
