About this listen
Jason dreams every night that he is transported to a dark and foreboding land where evil prevails and good struggles. It is a land of swords and sorcery, with castles and roaming monsters.
Each night the dream is just of continuation of the last. Jason can keep it to himself until he gets hurt in the dream world and wakes up bleeding!
His teachers worry that he is being abused by the parents, the parents think he is sleep walking and getting hurt and his school counselor is just trying to get to the bottom of it.
Meanwhile Jason must deal with an evil king who wants him dead, monsters attacking him, and a massive wall of ice that he must scale. Will Jason find someone who will believe him before it is too late?

Hertell Daggett isn't what he used to be—he'd once been married, he'd once been a physicist, and he'd once been shot in the head. The doctors got the bullet out, but a few tiny specks of copper stayed behind, floating inside his brain, connecting parts that aren't connected in the rest of us, filaments of species memory going back to the beginning of time.

It's the first and greatest rule Inkwell Featherfield ever learned. It's also the only way he knows how to survive—besides picking pockets, dodging the law, and using every ounce of his plucky charm. But none of this will be enough to save him now. If only he'd never snooped around a dead man's house. If only he'd never found that pocket watch full of strange magic. If only he'd known the old man had snuffed it at the hands of the ghostly Spektors, or that such dark spirits even existed, because now they're after him.

A decent start of a new series
I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I liked the premise of this story quite a lot, which is why I opted to pick it up. The author did a decent job of execution, though some of the adult's reactions weren't what I would consider realistic. It wasn't a huge detraction for me, just something I noticed. I still enjoyed the book. The narrator did a good job on the narration, though I noticed a slight echo throughout the whole book. Kind of that, recording in a bathroom sort of sound quality, though not that bad... Anyway, it's a fun book with a decent story and narrator. It's a little short to me for a credit, but certainly worth picking up on sale.

Bonus points for creativity...
I'm a bit torn on this book... it's very creative which I like, but it's taken so far that I have a hard time buying it. I enjoyed listening to it but I had to firmly tell myself "this is fiction, you don't have to believe that this is real or even probable." I had a tough time with the adults reactions, I don't know any adults who would react like that.
That said... it's fiction and it's fun and amusing to listen to.
I wasn't a fan of the character voices but they were consistent and distinct. The delivery suited the story and matched the tone nicely.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Being a hero isn’t all fun and games
Jason, a high school kid, is drafted by magic into a different world to save it from the evil king. What he finds out is that, if he gets hurt in that world, he bears the wounds in this one. And they use swords and vicious dogs in that world. But if he doesn’t save the world, he’ll just keep going back in his dreams for the next 50 years. Solution: draft an army of heroes to help him win quick, and hope none of them gets hurt too badly or dies.
One think I particularly liked is that all adults are not presented as adversaries or too dumb to live. They have good reasons for the things they do and good hearts motivating them. This is all too lacking in many young adult books, TV, and movies these days. And Jason is wise enough to understand them and their kindly motivations.
I liked Jason. He comes off a little young for a high-schooler, but that didn’t bother me much. He’s an honest, forthright kid with good intentions and plenty of smarts. And good friends. I liked the way the whole town rallied to a presumably abused young man who woke up each day with cuts and bruises, and their willingness to help him with his quest.
I would have pegged this as a middle-school book, but the story is fun and well-paced. The narration is pretty good, although also a little young-sounding. I will be interested to hear the next in the series.

Good Story
Good story, and good narration. This is another book where I wish the star system could be broken down a little better. I gave the story 4 stars, it's not that good, but it wasn't a 3 star either. Narration is good, not great, but good for the story.
