About this listen
"They say the Jackal Man lives in that house...."
Months after a family is forced to flee the beachfront property on 100 Winthrop Road, three young travelers lost outside of Cutler, Maine find themselves taking shelter in it. Strapped for cash, the three of them spend a night in the house, wondering why the lovely old building has been left abandoned.
They don't have to wonder for long.
Strange things take place in the empty house. Noises come from behind the walls, and its occupants feel as though they're being constantly watched. The townsfolk are quick to warn them away from the property, sharing with them bits and pieces of its terrible history.
But by then, it may already be too late. Winthrop House has a mind of its own, and the entities that dwell there won't rest until they have what they want.

Story
At sixteen, Sadie Young had a brush with death, and as a result she became more sensitive to the supernatural. Rather than embrace this gift, she spent years running from it, and from the darkness that once preyed upon her. Now twenty-five and working as a librarian, Sadie is called upon by a desperate family friend to look into a strange series of events. A teenaged girl has entered a reputedly haunted house in town and has gone mad. Committed, the girl attempts suicide and claims to be terrorized at all hours by a horrific specter known as "Mother Maggot."

Kevin Taylor is an Internet-famous handyman on a mission: Find a house and renovate it in 30 days. By flipping a derelict house in a month's time and chronicling the entire thing on video for his online subscribers, he seeks to become a star. The problems that plague this property will require more than elbow grease to fix, however. Shadows throughout the home are distorted, and an enigmatic trespasser keeps showing up in his footage. Worse still are the hideous voices that issue from otherwise empty rooms in the dead of night.

College professor Stephen Barlow needs cash. Badly. He puts his skepticism aside and signs on to a paranormal research organization in the hopes of scoring a fat bonus. Enter Chaythe Asylum: a long-shuttered and controversial institution where patients were allegedly subjected to unethical experiments. Stephen deems the old building, closed in 1989 after a series of grisly murders, as good a place as any to explore the possibility of the supernatural, and arranges to take a tour with his students. But it turns out that the asylum is not as abandoned as it seems. There is something sinister in the building.

It’s the house of their dreams. Former marine Harry and his wife, Sasha, have packed up their life and their golden retriever, Dash, and fled the corporate rat race to live off the land in rural Idaho. Their breathtaking new home sits on more than forty acres of meadow, aspen trees, and pine forest in the Teton Valley. Even if their friends and family think it’s a strange choice for an up-and-coming pair of urban professionals, Harry and Sasha couldn’t be happier about the future they’re building, all by their lonesome.

Another Strong Collaboration
Every time Ambrose Ibsen and Joe Hempel work together the product is a creepy, engaging listen. This is another example of this tandem’s success.
My only complaint is that this story is a bit shorter than some of the others, and lacked just a touch of the depth Ibsen’s other novels provide. It seems like some of the buildup of supernatural events was truncated, compared to his other works. Still, the overall story is quite enjoyable.
Joe Hempel delivers another great performance. He is quite at home in the horror genre.

Good Time Killer, Ending Lacks Detail
I was intrigued by the summary of this book right away because I love a good haunted story and the idea of friends getting stuck in a house to try to defeat whatever the entity might be but this story lacked some detail that I was craving for near the ending. I understood the concept and the background of the house but there weren't a lot of details as far as how the entity got there or why it remains there which was irritating. The ending was not at all what I expected and my stomach didn't settle well with how it all ended. *SPOILER ALERT* Who in the world just accepts a fate like that willingly without their own free will taken away? The ending did not make sense. The friends didn't really seem all that close in the first place and seemed to hold some grudges against each other which made it awkward from the very beginning. It just seems like things were left out. There was absolutely no character development either which I guess they didn't stick around long enough to see. Just very so, so. The thrill was good though. If you're bored and like haunted stories, go ahead.

I didn't particularly care for the ending and the overall story, but it was well written and the characters were very interesting. they reacted the way people actually react in real life which made it appealing and believable. I love the narrator, his voice was pitch Perfect he was a natural.

Loved the pace
I enjoyed the first in the series, but thought it dragged in places. The second part cuts the running time in half, and that works in its favor. There’s not a wasted scene. Of the three main characters I really like Ben, but found Naomi nearly intolerable. Regardless, characters and their motivations were adequately fleshed out. Narrator was excellent.
