Story
Jimmy Lee Hickam grew up along Red Dog Road, a dead-end strip of gravel and mud buried deep in the bowels of Appalachian Ohio. It is the poorest road, in the poorest county, in the poorest region of the state. To make things worse, the name Hickam is synonymous with trouble. Jimmy Lee hails from a heathen mix of thieves, moonshiners, drunkards, and general anti-socials that for decades have clung to both the hardscrabble hills and the iron bars of every jail cell in the region. This life, Jimmy Lee believes, is his destiny, someday working with his drunkard father at the sawmill, or sitting next to his arsonist brother in the penitentiary.

Island Changes They Don’t Want
Emily is caught up once again. With basketball, now the windmills. A town with a lot of set ideas that don’t want changes. Humorous and the bickering makes a interesting, enjoyable read. Given audio for my voluntary review and my honest opinion

A Beautiful Story!
I loved this audiobook! It is a beautifully written story about teamwork, overcoming adversity, and putting aside differences. Portions of the story are emotional and may remind the listener of past personal experiences with feelings of not fitting in or being valued as part of a group.
The main character, Emily, is a living example of a Christian. She tries to see people who are not always likeable through the eyes of Jesus and makes an effort to treat these people with kindness, even when it is difficult. She inspires the listener want to be a better person.
The message shines through that the world can become a better place when people come together, despite their differing viewpoints and beliefs.
The narrator gave a great performance with the voices of the various students and other characters.
I would absolutely recommend this audiobook to others!

Great Read
Windmills (Piercehaven #2) was another great read by Robin Merrill. Piercehaven Power has made it their mission to put two windmills up in Piercehaven. Many of the islanders don’t want this to happen. This will either tear the island apart or bring them back together. Emily has created a new softball team and hopes to bring the island back together. I can’t wait to read more by Robin Merrill.

Absolutely amazing!
Windmills: Piercehaven 2 was my second incredible read/listen from author Robin Merrill. Living in an area where windmills were built in the recent past and as a former softball coach, I particularly enjoyed the storyline. As in the first book, the story is methodically developed, drawing the reader in. Narrator Rebecca Winder adds greatly to the listening enjoyment with her wide variety of entertaining voices & inflections. Another wonderful Christian read I never anticipated a follow-up to the first book so this was a very pleasant surprise! I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. Good Message about Responsibility
I liked this story a lot. I think it's a good message about responsibility for our actions that everyone in our society could use today. Especially our youth. Some really funny moments throughout and a number of really touching ones. The narrator did a good job.

Windmills
What a beautiful story of a teacher who is dedicated to giving the best of herself to her students. She pulls together the girls of the small school in the hopes of healing for the girls and for her small town. The journey is emotional and inspiring! Ms. Merrill is a recent find for me and I will definitely be watching for more of her books.

Delightful listen- especially if you like softball
After listing to Piercehaven: Welcome to the Island, I knew I needed to either read or listen to this next book! I loved getting to visit the island again and see the characters from the first book again, and enjoyed getting to meet some new characters. And it was interesting to see that there actually is a sport that Emily DOES like! It was also fun to see some of my favorite Piercehaven students again, and I’m wondering whether we will see Thomas becoming interested in Jesus in the next book. 😊
There were only two things that I thought could have been done differently that would have helped me enjoy the book even more: first, this book involves a lot of detailed descriptions of softball games, and as someone who doesn’t know much about any sports, a lot of it went over my head or seemed unnecessarily long. I think I was able to connect with the first book more because the main character didn’t care for basketball any more than I did. But if you’re a softball fan (or have any knowledge of the sport at all), this probably won’t be an issue for you!
The second thing I thought could be improved was the narration. The narrator did a great job of giving life to many different characters, and I never had any difficulty knowing which character was talking. But about halfway through this book, I realized that there were several characters I didn’t like or trust very much, (and I didn’t know why Emily did!) and that this might be because of the inflections the narrator gave to their voices, not because of what the characters actually said or did in the book.
Overall, although I didn’t enjoy this book quite as much as the first, it was still a wonderful listen and I look forward to listening to the third!

So fun to travel back to Piercehaven..........
Windmills is the second book in the Piercehaven series, and, although it certainly could be enjoyed on it's own, reading this book after the first really increased my emotional involvement in the characters. In Windmills, our heroine, Emily, is still teaching at Piercehaven high school and still engaged to be engaged to James, a local lobster fisherman. The two main dramas in this story are a controversial argument over the building of windmills as an alternative power source, and the establishment by Emily of a high school girl's softball team. With her usual skill, Merrill seamlessly blends these two issues together while making Emily more and more a part of both Piercehaven and her student's lives. Although I know nothing about softball, and a large portion of the book focuses on softball practices and games, I quickly became invested in Emily and her girls succeeding. I was so enthralled by this book that happy tears were streaming down my face at the ending. I can hardly wait to see what further adventures Merrill has planned for Emily, James and Piercehaven.
Rebecca Winder narrates the first book in the series, so that continuity helped me to jump right back into the Piercehaven world. She has an extremely pleasing, almost lilting voice that is the perfect choice for Emily's down-to-earth yet bright and positive personality. Merrill and Winder make a powerful audiobook team, and I hope to listen to many collaborations between these two in the future.
I received a copy of this audiobook at my request in exchange for this honest review.

Christian Contemporary Romance
So much fighting amongst friends and family over the windmills coming to the Island or not. It almost looks like it could destroy this close knit community, but Emily's on another mission for her kids (students) and this time she fights for starting a girl's softball team! I loved the final scene before the epilologe! Teamwork is something this town knows how to do, but gets a reminder from a few girls who aren't even that great at this new sport. It's quite touching, but again I got swamped by all the sports talk and even a bit lost in all the girls names, and character traits.
But that boat ride was sure romantic! Even if it was predictable!
Same narrator, and I still loved her!
