About this listen
Lipstick. Bright, red lipstick. Nothing but lipstick.
Even though it's against our faith to wear a color that screams of sexual promiscuity and deviant behavior, I'm not allowed to protest.
But, I want to.
So badly.
You see, there's more to me than the braid that spills down my back.
More to me than the layers of heavy fabric that maintain my modesty.
And so much more than the oppressive wedding band that adorns my finger - the same band that each of my sister wives wear.
So much more.
To protest would be sinful.
I must keep sweet, that is my duty.
So I'll wear the lipstick. I'll do as I'm told.
And I'll do my best to silence the resistance within me, to push him from my mind.
If only my heart would do the same.

Story
Faith, I tell them, is a mystery, elusive to many, and never easy to explain. Sweeping and lyrical, spellbinding and unforgettable, David Ebershoff’s The 19th Wife combines epic historical fiction with a modern murder mystery to create a brilliant novel of literary suspense. It is 1875, and Ann Eliza Young has recently separated from her powerful husband, Brigham Young, prophet and leader of the Mormon Church. Expelled and an outcast, Ann Eliza embarks on a crusade to end polygamy in the United States.

She had no choice in the matter - none of the girls did. Her mission was to give birth to and raise many children in devoted service to a shared husband. Susan was 15 years old when she became the sixth wife of Verlan LeBaron, one of the leaders of a rogue Mormon cult, who was engaged in a blood feud with his brother that from 1972 to 1988 claimed up to two dozen lives. Story
Thirteen-year-old Kyra has grown up in an isolated polygamous community without questioning her father's three wives and her twenty brothers and sisters. Or at least without questioning them much—if you don't count her secret visits to the Mobile Library on Wheels to read forbidden books, or her meetings with the boy she hopes to choose for herself instead of having a man chosen for her. But when the Prophet decrees that Kyra must marry her 60-year-old uncle—who already has six wives—Kyra must make a desperate choice in the face of violence and her own fears of losing her family.

Story
Every so often a love story so captures our hearts that it becomes more than a story - it becomes an experience to remember forever. The Notebook is such a book. It is a celebration of how passion can be ageless and timeless, a tale that moves us to laughter and tears and makes us believe in true love all over again.... At 31, Noah Calhoun, back in coastal North Carolina after World War II, is haunted by images of the girl he lost more than a decade earlier.

Heads always turned when Rose McCarthy walked into a room. Nearly six feet tall, she was ramrod straight, and impeccably put together with faultless style, long graceful legs, her snow-white hair cut in a chin-length rounded cap. Her piercing blue eyes missed nothing. She could terrify anyone with a few well-chosen, soft-spoken, eloquent words, or comfort and delight a young employee with generous praise. For 25 years, she had been the legendary editor in chief of Mode magazine.

Story
India Taylor lived in a world of manicured lawns and neatly maintained calendars: a merry-go-round of Little League, piano lessons, and Cape Cod summer vacations. With four wonderful children, India believed in commitment and sacrifice, just as she believed in Doug, the man she married 17 years before. For India, this was the promise she made, the life she had chosen - not the award-winning career as a photojournalist she once had. It was a choice she had never truly regretted. Until she begins to regret it with all her heart.

In September 2007, Elissa Wall, the star witness against polygamous sect leader Warren Jeffs, gave captivating testimony of how Jeffs forced her to marry her first cousin at age 14. This harrowing account proved to be the most compelling evidence against Jeffs, showing the harsh realities of this closed community and the lengths to which Jeffs went in order to control the sect's women. Now, in this courageous memoir, Wall tells the incredible story of how she emerged from the confines of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints and helped bring one of America's most notorious criminals to justice.

Something Very Different but Beautiful
This was a hard story to read and don't get me wrong, I LOVE my dark gritty, taboo reads; however, this one really delves deep into the world of polygamy. There are just so many feelings that come along with this story that I still need to process it. If you wish to hear my final thoughts check out the weekly wrap up (May 27 - Jun 2) on my YouTube Channel.

Too much sexual content for my liking
Brinley is ordered by the prophet to marry an older FLDS man while still a teen. She is wife number 7 and has no idea when she marries what awaits her in the marriage bed. Brinley thought all she ever had to so is kiss a man. She didn't like her assigned husband and didn't want to have his babies which is definitely expected of her. One day her purse gets snatched by a guy she recognizes as Porter, an ex FLDS. She goes and confronts him to get her purse back as it contains two very important, hidden items.
This story is about Brinley, her relationships with some of the other wives. Brinley dispising her husband, her lust for another man, her hiding secrets from the entire family and her trying to decide if staying in the FLDS is right for her.
This book has a lot of sexual scenes which go into detail. I didn't expect this in a book about any Mormon wives, especially the FLDS! Plus, I would very highly doubt any Mormon or FLDS woman would actually have a sexual affair while married. I live in a highly Mormon area and all the Mormons I know would certainly be too scared of losing their Celestial Kingdom or getting in trouble with the prophet, therefore NO adultery would be happening.
The narrator was excellent. I felt sorry for her having to read the sex scenes. As a Christian, I would not recommend this book due to the high sexual content.

Couldn't finish
I guess I'm just not the audience for which this book was intended. I am fascinated with the FLDS and enjoyed the 19th wife and so I was expecting this to be similar. Turns out it's just a sexy romance set in an FLDS compund. I'm not a big fan of cheesy romance novels. I had to stop listening after a few too many explicit sexual situations. Gross. I returned this title.

Love the audio!!
I loved this book when I read it the first time around. I decided to listen as a reread before reading mother before wife, book two in the series. It's been almost a week, as I haven't had much listening time, but I'm so glad that I decided to see it through. I love remembering all of the things that I had forgotten about the compound. And Brinley and Porter. I think I'm even going to read the little nocella again before continuing on to mother before wife. Just for another refresher….
Love everything about this series!!

A beautiful story, brought to life.
This is crazy accurate with the details of polygamy life. I have always been intrigued by the Colorado City polygamists and this gave me a unique and beautiful story about following your heart despite the pressures of doing what you are supposed to.
Bridget Haight was so perfect for this book. She had that innocent tone to her voice that made you adore the character even more.
I hope to see the rest of The Compound Series on Audible soon!

Just WOW!
Was not expecting this from this story!
First- stories about polygamy usually aren't my thing, but this entire story was just awesome.
It dug really deep into polygamy, which is not what i was expecting.
the narrator bought the story completely to life, she was perfect!
Very well written, and very well narrated.
I do wish the entire series was on audible though, but the story captivated me so much, that i read the ones that are not!
